On my way to work this morning one of my coolant hoses (water pump to heater core) decided to tear. I replaced the hose with a new one and now need to top off the coolant. I think there is a certain way to do this but not sure. I need to start the car and put the heat on and wait till the thermostat opens for the level to drop then fill it right? If it matters its my jeep cherokee.

keep the cap off the rad, fill up, fire it up and let it idle up to temp. when the t-stat opens the fluid level will drop considerably - fill it up the rest of the way and shut it off, put cap on and fill overflow tank up to level.

thats how i've always done it on my fox.
