I looked in the how to section and couldnt find any on torque converter replacement. If you do please link me.

Do i need an upgraded transmission cooler with the 2500 stall TC? How many qts of oil total do i need and what kind? i cant remember exactly, but i think i got mercon V, just wanted to make sure that was it.

THanks for your help guys.

Pour 1-1 1/2 qts. into the converter before the install. You don't NEED another cooler but the SD cooler is a must-do mod IMO if you can for overall trans long life. You'll need to listen for 3 clicks IIRC when putting the converter in while turning it and make sure it's pushed all the way back on the input shaft.

Hughes Performance in Phx. They make some real strong torque converters.
Some of our local members have used their products and we( AZLOC )get a discount there,

Shop around Mai. Napa, AA, Auto Zone, Pep-Boys all carry some kind of Mercon. You may be okay with the Mercon V but I wouldn't use it.

yeah.. im in tucson. And the guy was doing my install today. What is the downside to using this stuff i guess? Do i need to drain and refill later or is it ok to keep whats in there now.

SO enlighten me on this. If its an upgraded Mercon formula, why would it not be a viable substitute for Mercon? And is it just straight Mercon? Not Mercon III?

so i hate to sound stupid.. but ive done some reading and i couldnt get a straight and solid answer as far as the debate on mercon vs mercon V/synthetic atf. Just want to know why better isnt really better.. as in this case, you would think you get more for synthetic at almost $6 a quart.

Another question, as far as the SD cooler... are there any specs of what i need or can be a good replacement? Im looking on ebay and have no freaking clue what i want. they are under $100 for most that are listed. I found an actual f250 replacement online for $175 but didnt have specs (height, thickness, etc) ANy help would be great!

Use only Mercon III. Here are some good links to read, http://www.timskelton.com/lightning/race_prep/powertrain/tranny_mods.htm#deep_pans,
http://www.svtperformance.com/forums/showthread.php?t=328745, and here are two Ford part numbers for the 4x4 pan and filter to buy, F81Z-7A194-BA 4x4 trans pan, YC3Z-7A098-BA 4X4 filter. I just replaced my filter( I have a 4x4 pan) added the SD transcooler with filter (Napa 1622) and steel braided lines and use Penzoil Mercon III (in gallon containers) and used 2 1/2. You will use at least 3 gallons of Mercon.

look for a trans cooler from a 6.0 diesel, I believe they are 24 pass compared to the 11 or so pass from the 7.3. theyre about twice as big.

well the guy working on my truck called... he didnt get to finish it today. he said it looks like its been removed before. 2 of my bolts on the tc were stripped and they were trying to get it out.

I sure would like to have a talk with the dealer who apparently sold me bone stock Lightning -- i found out a couple months ago someone had installed drop shackles, and now looks like the tc's been messed with. Oh well, should be done tomorrow though. I hope. :nonono:

I know that everyone is dead against using MerconV but as long as it's the new Formula or Dual usage MerconV it is fine.

It's your truck so do what you want with it. I'm just suppling the info from Ford.

This is the TSB for fluid replacement.

ISSUE:
MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON® V as a service fluid.

ACTION:
Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON® can now be serviced using MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON® / MERCON® V. "1981-2004 E-Series, F-Super Duty"

There is nothing different internallly in our transmissions that make them "Super Transmissions". They have a few more clutches, different torque converter and VB. 4R100 is a 4R100. If the L's transmission did not apply then it would say "1981-2003 F-150 except Lightning".
