I contacted the current club president, and he asked me to post this on his behalf: Hey guys; my name is Joe, and I’m the current President for the UConn Car Club. Zach pointed me towards this thread so he could gain a little clarity and understand better what happened with the incident described by user Chris!. You’ll have to bear with me speaking through Zach until I can get my account approved on here. Chris’ explanation of the incident is 100% true based on what knowledge I have, but therein lies the problem – “the knowledge I have”. The fact is that not a SINGLE one of our current members or officers, myself included, were a part of the group of individuals that organized (or even simply participated in!) the Show the year that the described incident occurred. Honestly, I’m so ignorant toward the whole thing that I can’t even tell you what year it happened in. My entire knowledge of the incident comes from hearsay and snippets I’ve heard from third parties, not dissimilar from what Chris has laid out above. I wholeheartedly agree that there are a multitude of things that should have been handled more competently both during and after the incident, and it is terribly unfortunate and irresponsible of those who were involved in that situation did not follow through with what they said they would have. That being said, I don’t believe it’s wholly fair to hold a grudge over the current membership of our club for something that none of us were involved with. We are a college club; our membership turns over rather rapidly. Unfortunately for us, we have to work to absolve any negative stigmas and events we’ve inherited, and this is one of them. Honestly, I’m tired of hearing about it – it inevitably comes up in about one thread every year, and I don’t know what I, or we for that matter, can do to change it. At this point, I feel foolish offering “details” or “repairs” to cars that have likely been detailed, repaired, and possibly even sold some years in the past now. I’m left with really no obvious option but to reach out to those involved back those years ago, and see what can be done to individually make each and every one of them happy. And, again, this brings us to one of those forks in the road – I don’t even know person number one to contact to begin to make things right, being that no one I know was involved. Like I said before, myself as well as all other active members weren’t present at that show and had nothing to do with how it was run before, during, or after. All that we essentially know about the incident comes from the stories like this that come up. That being said – Chris, if there is personally anything you think I can do to assist in making things right for you personally regarding this situation, please let me know (via uconncarclub@gmail.com will be your best bet for a fast response). You seem to be this “person one” that we’ve been seeking to hopefully reach out and absolve the current and future members of past demons. I just hate for it to be one of these situations where nothing can be done to make it right, and yet for us to still have to deal with this dark cloud following the show years into the future. Like I said, if there is something you think I can do for you, please reach out. I’m not saying that I’m going to throw the kitchen sink at everyone in attempt to make them happy – I don’t think that’s necessarily fair, either, but I will at least make an attempt to come up with some sort of solution. If, on the other hand you feel there is nothing that can be done at this point in time, I can only plead that you reconsider your opinions. I don’t think that the current membership, nevermind the future membership looking to enjoy the club, deserve to deal with something that they are wholly disconnected from outside of this abstract, inherited relationship. I will be leaving the club at the end of this year, and truly hope that those who come after me don’t have to deal with this; I believe it is simply unfair to them. Anyway, thanks for your consideration and hearing me out Chris. Again, I just want to reiterate that I’m not suggesting that you’re wrong in your opinion – I certainly agree with you that it was handled inappropriately. I hope you can see where I’m coming from.
