I just got my 2001 L dynoed today. 343 hp and 415 torque, stock with only a K&N air filter. I live in so. calif and temp was 76 this morning. This is my first lightning and was wondering if someone could tell if i should get an upper pulley or a lower pulley. The guy at the shop says an upper, but i have read about lower pulleys also. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i instl'd a PSP lower pulley on my 01 last sat.(easy 1.5 hr.). added about 2lbs of boost(on the inaccurate stock gauge).

most guys think that the upper pulley, being smaller in dia., would be more prone to induce belt slippage. also, the upper would be much harder to remove as it is a pressed on fit.

Go with the lower pulley. They are an easy install whereas the upper pulley requires a press to get it off and back on.

hilander; can't give definative info on performance increase-didn't get a time slip before or after-yet. but the increased boost has to make a positive difference.

flintstone; i went with a slightly(2mm?) longer belt to keep the snout bearings happy. it is a gates belt that i bot at a napa store--no. K080670(you may need to drop the 'K').

Lower pulley is better.

If you read the Power Surge Performance lower pulley description you will realize the the lower pulley is better. I cant say from experience but from what Ive been told the lower is better. There are only two companys, Eaton(Original Manufacturer) and Magnuson(Re-Manufacutrer) that have the right tools to replace the upper pulley. If you try to do it or have someone besides eaton or magnuson try to do it you will cause damage to the shaft bearing, which will work but cause problems in the future.
My advice, go with the lower.

I think the lower pulley is better also , But I ca`nt say anything bad about these upper pulleys by ( METCO MOTORSPORTS INC. ) made by ( SOUTH FLORIDA PULLEY ) the pulley hub fit the blower shaft very smooth !, And I got 2 psi more boost with the stock belt

And with the RIGHT TOOLS!! it will not hurt the thrust bearings ! the job was CAKE!.

blower pulley question

Although the lower pulley is recommended for good reason, what would result if both pulleys were changed? 14psi? blown engine?

I'm going for the upper pulley, the guys that I've heard talk about them love them. I'll also be buying the tool as well so I can make the truck "stock" again if needed. My 02.

I put on the metco upper pulley last week. [email protected] awesome! I got about 2 lbs extra boost-by the stock gauge. You can feel the difference. It took me about 45 min to do the install and about 2 minutes to change the pulley from stock size to smaller. Well worth the money. I also plan to go with JL's new lower pulley.:)
