im considering going to uti next year for their collision program and am wondering if anyone has gone to school there or has family/friends that have attended. this would be a big deal for me coming from south dakota, houston alone has well over twice as many people as my whole state lol. and would constitute an 1100+miles move and 20K in tuition. also how are the neighborhoods within a 20min drive of the school? like i said this would be a huge decision for me and any feedback would help a lot. ty in advance :read::shrug:

This has been covered at least a dozen times. Go to a good community college and take an auto body program. You will be better off, financially and professionally.

It's in the area known as Greenspoint, aka Gunspoint. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenspoint,_Houston,_Texas ) It's not the best area, but the police have been working to clean up the area a LOT, and it's not nearly as bad as it used to be. It's just a short drive to Spring, ( http://www.city-data.com/city/Spring-Texas.html, http://www.oldtownspring.com/ ) The Woodlands, ( http://www.experiencethewoodlands.com/ ) and Conroe, ( http://www.cityofconroe.org/ ) which are all nice...Especially The Woodlands. In The Woodlands, we've got the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, ( http://www.woodlandscenter.org/ ) which is where there are a lot of concerts. If off-roading is your thing, then there's Spring Creek Offroad Park. ( http://www.springcreekoffroad.com/ ) I've had a few friends go to the U.T.I Houston location, and they've all seemed to like it. Just don't be late to class...lol

my thought for going to a specialized school was to avoid generals and such. i have absolutely no desire to go to math and English classes that have absolutely nothing to do with what i want to do with my life. also theres only 1 community college in the state of south dakota that has a collision/body program and its more of a general get the feeling of the bodywork/painting and i already know the basics. its hard to get a job at a body shop or even have them take you serious when you have no real "experience" but i do not want to take 2 years of schooling with a year of generals. so idk what to do:shrug: also im sorry that i brought up an apparently old topic but the search button failed me again :(

Let me just clear it all up for you. I own a paint and body shop that is actually about 10 min. from UTI. The school has me on a list to call me and see if I need any help. Well lets just say I have tried that about 6 times and they are all dumb and under trained!!The only thing you will know is the basics like tape, and minor body work oh yea you will also be able to talk like you know what the hell your doing but really they have no clue. I know you are way better off not going there but do what you gotta do. Im sure that someone on here will disagree with me about UTI but hey just like I said they think they know alot because they went there.

thats what i wanted to hear, the truth! lol those are the same things i've heard about wyotech which turned me away from there. i dont want to go to school to be able to say that i know what i'm doing i want to be able to do it! i also know that the best way to learn is just to do it but i have tried to get into some of the shops around here and even though i have most of my own tools and some limited experience with bodywork, no one will give me a shot the first thing they ask is "do you have any schooling or in shop experience" when i say no they laugh me out the door.
painting is my thing i have been doing it since before i graduated high school but its all been pretty much factory paint work since no body shop will hire me and factory work is not what i want to do. some day i hope to have my own business but i have to start somewhere. ive even gone as far as bringing my own car that i painted to the shops with me to show them and they look at the car and say it looks great.... but they still wont give me a shot:shrug: im at a loss for what to do
