Valve covers 4.6 oil under pressure.

I mentioned in my other thread that I normally play with old hot rods, and I have built a bunch of motors in my life, but I have never seen this one. I called my son, and he has torn down two 4.6 engines and he has never seen it either.

Today, I was tearing down the top end of the 4.6 2 valve I am going to use in my V6 car. I am replacing every bolt on part , gasket, and hose, so I don't have to get back in there again any time soon. When I started removing the valve cover bolts (some are studs) about half of them released some air pressure and some white liquid when cracked loose. It was as if there was some white oily substance trapped under each bolt and when loosened, it would bubble out. It was not watery, a little thicker, but not as thick as grease.

Since those are blind holes, the only thing I can figure is that the previous owner put some sort of lube or lithium grease on each bolt before he torqued it, trapping air in the rubber seals. Then, over time, as the grease heated, it built up pressure. Only about half of the holes did it, and some squirted out under more pressure than others. One bolt actually popped loudly when I broke it loose.

Has anyone ever seen this before ? Very odd.

What style valve covers were on the engine? There are 2 types of 2v valve covers. 1 uses one gasket and the other uses a gasket and individual gaskets on each bolt/stud. If you have the later then what you are seeing is most likely oil and moisture as the gaskets probably gave out some time ago.

I have the one with one large perimeter gasket and 11 rubber/steel seals on each stud/bolt. That is a possibility, what you say. Just never seen this before, but this is the first 4.6 I've played with.
