I test drove several cars over the past few weeks and none of them compared with the mustang. I also test drove an auto and hated it compared to the manual w/ a 373. Should I just get it and hope for the best? Or would it be possible to order one with a Tremec T56?
I drove the auto and hated it compared to the 6 speed with .373. I am just a manual guy, been driving manuals since I turned 16. Waiting for the recall/2013 is a good idea, but right now I am driving a 97 civic that is going to need a bunch of repairs so I'd like to get rid of it before putting any more money in it. Of course, I could fix it up and then use it as my beater.
Buy a camaro.
I haven't had a single issue with mine and it now has 8K+ on the OD.
I take the car to the track with slicks and run the piss out of it. It has never let me down.
Personally I think the % of cars with legit transmission issues is low. There are related driveline components that contributed to the majority of owner issues. Ford has rectified most of those. The aftermarket offers solutions.
1. Replace stock clutch. (I feel Ford has a handle on this.)
2. Replace stock shifter and remote shifter mount. (I feel Ford does not have a handle on this.)
3. Replace the transmission fluid. (I use Royal Purple 75w-90 gear oil and it has been great. Ford offers a DCT fluid replacement for those who complain of cold weather shifting notchiness.)
Ultimately outside of a very select few cars, you'll probably just get the slight grind or notchyness that most of us have. At the end of the day, you have a warranty.

I think the reason the synchros on some or going bad is because some are not shifting with clutch down all the way and are somewhere near the middle give or take and are grinding gears cause they are inadvertantly shifting with clutch partially out and not disengaged fully. Don't downshift to a crazy low gear either, the brakes are good on these cars, use them. You'll burn up the synchros otherwise. Performing the fluid swap is a dramatic difference for when your tranny is cold for shift quality. I recommend if you test drive, turn the radio and ac off and get on it a little and see if you can hear any whinning coming from the tranny, if it does, don't buy it.

I read you where you said that before so I agree, if you are shifting with the clutch fully depressed and you are on your 3rd tranny you could very well have a lemon. I'm on my second, I have 17 thousand miles on the car and about 7 thousand miles on the new tranny. The reason my origional was replaced was because it whined horribly from day one. It had the coldstart shifting issue on the origional, but the fluid swap fixed that, just not the whine. I do know once you burn up a gear and a synchro, it will always grind no matter if you shift with clutch all the way down from that point on. So if you are telling the truth, and they replaced the tranny three times and you shifted the car perfectly in how it was designed to operate I would be getting rid of that car. I feel for you man, that has to suck. I will say it makes it hard for people to believe its the cars fault and not the driver after the third tranny, you think they would have fixed it by then. On how much grief that car has given you i would get out of it, no matter if its fords fault or yours. I'll say this though, it very well could be a lemon, I'm not going to judge you on your driving ability since I've never ridden with you. Good luck to you getting car problems finally solved.

The skip-shift has never worked, it locked me out of 2nd, 2nd gear grinds, 2nd gear shakes, entire tranny rattles, HVAC is dying, SYNC is dying, Motor sputters when it first starts and it is 100% bone stock with 5000 miles. Buy a Camaro or Challenger... take it from me, you don't want this car.

Other than the first gear in the 3.73 manual the auto is faster every where else stock.
In stock form the auto is going to be slower if the manual has a competent driver even with the 3.31.
The auto puts less power to the wheels and if you work out the gear ratios it only has 4 gears that are usable for acceleration whereas the manual has 5.

As far as all the crap about the manual transmission in these cars...
I bought my '12 in May and have almost 4k miles on it now. It has been great. It will occasionally give me a notchy shift going to 2nd but mostly only when I'm being lazy when shifting.
When I am ripping through the gears and under hard acceleration it shifts perfectly. I also have no weird engine noises, or knocks, or oil consumption, or anything.
My only complaints is that the interior isn't quite as nice as my last car and I forgot how hard it is to keep a black car clean.
My feelings about this overblown transmission thing is as follows:
Are there some "lemons" probably, but what happens is people jumping on a bandwagon with the metooitis. If you don't know how to drive a manual and you don't rev match, and you have the momentum of the car going all over the place due to your foot and hand being out of sync than you can make any manual shift poorly. The true numbers of how many were defects is probably very small and your chances of getting one are pretty slim. Of course if you are that worried than I can only suggest you go down and buy a honda accord or toyota camry since they have loads of reliability and 0 fun factor :shrug:

I agree to a point. On the strip or dig, stock vs stock (if the manual driver can drive) it should win. Having owned both, my auto absolutely pulls harder and passes cars faster from a roll than my 3.31 and 3.73 manual ever did especially 40 on up. Unless there was something wrong with my 6M :shrug: I haven't driven any other manual 5.0's to compare but mine. Btw, 5th in the auto is plenty useable believe me . The first 3 gears is all you need to do the job.
I have stated the exact thing you did in a past thread arguing for the manual saying it made more power to the wheels and was lighter... without really even driving the auto. I was being ignorant. The manual looks better on paper but it's not (at least in a straight line). Turns yes.
Believe me the auto is nasty in daily driving and a better platform for drag racing.
