Why does my car sound like it has a freaking fog horn?

ok..the title says it all. It's really starting to bug me. My car sounds like I'm ready to tow a barge into port or something. It's only when it is cold outside and it starts making this crazy noise...rpms jump up in neutral then drop down. If I'm not in the car it typically will drop the rpms back down and then stall. Now if I'm in the car I can put it in gear and it stops. Once it gets warm it stops. So...any ideas?

Ha ha, it's called "moosing." My car does it when it's cold too. In fact, I think all Fords do. Mine never stalls though, although I've heard Steve (sweetsvt99) say his does sometimes. There is a way to fix it, but you'll have to ask Steve how to do that as I have no idea. It's really a harmless little problem that goes away when it warms up.

hmmm..

When my it is cold outside (45 or below) My cars idles fine, but the check engine light comes on ( I got out and opened the hood then engine was still there j/j)... and when I pull up to a stop it bogs down to about 500 rpm then dies.... after it gets warmed up it still bogs, but it catches itself, and doesnt' die.. It is a 5 speed so it is really tricky trying to balance clutch, brake, and hand brake, while trying to keep it from dying with the gas... Any Suggestions?

Thank you. I appreciate your help. Yours too Joel. It's kind of embarrassing actually to have your car make that noise. It only just started. And no, Matt..it has nothing to do with my in/ability to operate or maintain my vehicle.

First I should smack you for making me go over to CEG.. LOL J/K CEG has alot of useful information on our cars. AS Joel stated tho its called 'moosing'. Which some do it and some dont. Mine has never done it. But here is the link to the noise your car is making.

:p Yeah I'm sure. But I appreciate your skeptism. And here I thought diesel engine generators were the same as car engines - I'm still trying to figure out where the jacket water heater is supposed to go. :-?

The sound -It is really horrible. I should record it. It never did it til I moved back to Florida. I lived through two winters, one of which was in Baltimore, no sound and now.... Yesterday on my way home, I'm sitting there in traffic and this guy rolls down his window and with this look of concern on his face asked me if there was anything he could do and that he felt my belt needed to be replaced (?) totally different sound. ANYWAY - it is really horrible

Mind kind of sounds like a cross between a moose and a whale. I just barely have to tap the gas pedal and it quits.

Foghorn, definite foghorn. Mine was doing it at the end of last year. The fix on CEG is suppose to clear up the problem rather well. I had my car in for some work and still being under warranty I asked em’ to fix it, and it has not acted up since. If you go to the dealer it is helpful to have the TSB and parts #s.
It was pretty funny when it did it though, people would look around like WTFWT, and I would just act like I didn’t hear it. Cars just aren’t suppose to make sounds like that.
