Widest tire on 17x9 rim for a 1st gen..

Hi,

Buddy has a 1st gen fox body. Stock suspension and all. He has 17x9 wheels, Can he fit 285 nitto 555r tires or should he stick with 275 ?

I know 315 won't fit right? Even though they fit on my 03 cobra with stock 17x9 setup.. hmmmm


Any thoughts?

Supposedly there have been some guys that have fit a 315 under the fenders. It depends on the wheel, backspacing and tire manufactuer.

Cool, so you would think 285's would fit fine on his stock suspension setup?

Let's put it this way, I wouldn't bet on it. Like I said, it really depends on the wheel. The width and diameter aren't so much as issue as what the backspacing is.

i know that some guys in the road-race forums put 275s up front, but they have to do some crazy shit to bulge the front fenders out...and let's just say, it's not the prettiest look in the world :beer:

I would stay with a 255x40x17 front & 275x40x17 rear

On my 93 Coupe I have 275x35x18 (18x9 rim) Front & 295x35x18 (18x10) Rear and they clear w/Eibach ProKit springs.... but its a tight fit and you have to be careful about full lock turns.

Same setup on mine. With 17x9 cobra R's in full lock turns I keep knocking off the inside wheel weights on the front. Mine is lowered as well. 275 will slightly touch the rear fender lip as well.
