Welcome Cobra Norway! The US Constitution is supposed to be the supreme law of all 50 states. However, each state has the ability to enforce their own laws that may or may not be *technically* in violation of the Constitution. For example, I live in Arizona. The 2nd amendment guaranteeing citizens the right to keep and bear arms is the strongest of all 50 states. The only firearm restrictions we have are that of the National Firearms Act of 1934 (federal) and the Gun Control Act of 1968, and the Firearm Owners Protection act. That means we have next to no restrictions on semi-auto firearms and we can legally own machine guns, suppressors and short barrel rifles and shotguns. This is done through tax and permit approvals through the Federal government. In states like California, there are much harsher laws regarding firearms including bans of normal configuration AR15s, AKs and other "assault" weapons. There is a California "Roster of Safe Handguns" which is essentially a de facto handgun ban. Even with federal approval, it is nearly impossible for California citizens to own machine guns, suppressors short barrel rifles and shotguns. Technically, all these firearms laws in California and states like them are unconstitutional. In order for these laws to be abolished, they must be argued before the Supreme Court of the United States. The Supreme court can pick and choose which cases it wants to hear so appealing a lower court's ruling on Constitutionality of State level laws can be very expensive and time consuming to litigate. Which is why groups like the NRA and Gun Owners of America exist. Then there are states like California and Oregon (where Portland is) that are politically VERY liberal and considered extremely to the left of political center. In states like this, there are local and state laws and policies that seemingly protect criminals more than victims. In the case of Portland, the Mayor AND the State Governor are allowing this mayhem to occur because they are deluded as to WHO is out on the streets. They (wrongly) think that the mob out rioting are "protesters" looking for social justice against "racism" and "police brutality". These shitbags are actually Far Left Marxist Communists attempting to incite riots to overthrown current rule of law. They are literally fighting FOR establishing Communism throughout the US. They have hijacked a reform movement for their own agenda. When they go rampaging through the streets, local and state police are ORDERED to stand down and not stop them. If citizens are armed or try to defend themselves in these large cities from rioters and mobs, the far left mayors and even state Governors will prosecute the citizen defending themselves. They charge them due to very flawed politically influenced social beliefs. It is an attempt to inject their warped far left political ideology on the masses. The funny part is that eventually, the Communist mob turns on the very political figures that cleared the way for them to riot on the streets. By the way, most of these Communist rioters are middle class white people who know absolutely nothing about real world struggle, discipline, respect or reality. They have had everything provided for them and think thats how the world works. I hope this helps make things a little more clear, and again welcome to SVTP!
