would a hi-po 2-seater Ford have a negative impact on the Mustang?
If Ford comes out with a 2-door sports car in the 50-60K range, that would draw from the high end Mustang sales (whether that be a GT350, SVT Cobra, Mach 1, etc). However, with Ford broadening the scope of the Mustang platform, maybe they'd make up for those loss in sales with more overall Mustang sales across the globe. I saw an article saying the Falcon is being replaced by the Mustang in Australia. Trying to compete with GM in the Corvette platform could be very dangerous (evident by "we concede that platform to the Corvette"). It's comparable to the Microsoft Zoom trying to compete with the iPod. The first one to the market is the winner. They would have to invest a lot of R&D and manufacturing costs to develop such a car. Manufacturing costs and capital investment can be avoided if they could find a way to build it on the same line as the Mustang though. If Ford was to introduce a new sports car, it would more than likely, follow the lines of the GT. It would be a highly labor intensive product (little automation) with lower capital investment. Once again, you're going to be talking about a $100K+ Ford. It would be an exciting time, but I couldn't buy one!
