Anyone know what this thing is?

I was installing my MGW shifter recently ans saw this black box with a 3 foot kinda stiff wire attached, approx. 1/8" thick.
The box is mounted just ahead of the shifter.
The wire is routed loosely around the area of the shifter and ends with a flexible circuit of some sort covered in black tape.
Also, there is a shorter wire sticking out from under the tape .....kinda like an antenna almost. It can be seen in pic 2.
The circuit is wrapped in this black tape and mounted on black foam.
The box has a sticker that looks factory.
Does anyone know what this is and does?

that or a lojack tracking devise or alarm?

Not a clue. I've never seen anything like that. I take it you're not the original owner of the car?

Small black box with some wires going to it maybe?:shrug:

Im 2nd owner of the car.
Bought it Jan 4, 08.
Original owner died 1.5 yrs ago.
His wife/sons sold it.
I wasnt told it has a lojack or alarm.
I will email them and ask..maybe they will remember.

did you cut the sheet metal around the boz,or was that already cut.

I mean did you cut the sheet metal around the BOX or was that already cut when you started working on the shifter........

I didnt cut anything.
What you see is what I found when I removed the factory dust boot/cover.
I dont believe its a speedo correction device....it doesnt feel like its geared differently..at 80mph in 6th gear it tachs around 2000 rpm...sounds like 3.55 gears, right?
The car came with a Pro50 shifter.
The MGW is much better btw.
Im thinking I better trace all wires leading into the box.
Maybe then I'll figure out what it is.

Can you read what's on the paper tag and post it up?

It looks like a center crash sensor/module to me.

I can see "Tues Oct 07 03" and "05:44:21 pm" on the sticker
The born on date is Oct 09, 2003.
Those words make me think its a factory part.
I will post a closeup this weekend.
There might be more words/numbers under the tape.

It does not look "factory" look at the screw. Silver and put in on an angle....

The black tape doesn't seem factory.Your rite,the phillips screws are not ford.
Have you attempted to unplug it yet.

Could it be some kind of module for the radio?
