Hey guys just wondering what people think of the following cooling mods:

Please give your 2 cents on each mod, what the benefit is (obvs cooling but how effective is it? is it worth it?, any other inputs)

1. Killer Chiller-
2.Venom Cooler- Really interested in this for my steig stg 6, but not much info about it.
3.Head cooling mod-
4. 170* Thermostat-

I have a ported eaton setup and I really want to keep the heat out as much as possible. The cooling mods that I have at the moment is AFCO Dual pass h/e, and Ice Tank. I want my car to stay cool and efficient as possible.

Thanks in advance!

The head cooling mod I feel is more of a safety precausion if anything. A lot of people swear by it. When I do a new clutch ect. I'll probably do this.

IMO if you do the killer chiller you won't need any other cooling mods since you already have an after market h/e. I hear nothing but great things about killer chillers and it's on my long list of mods I don't have money for lol.

I only have the Reische 170 T-stat, but seems pretty effective IMO. During my last (and 1st) autocross event I went directly from the end of my heat to my spot and let the car idle for 7 minutes. I also had it idling for 10 minutes before the heat started. Didn't get over 212°F the whole time, and only got to that point while idling after my run. Fan kicked in and knocked the temps back down. I'm effectively stock though.

These temps were taken from diag mode on the odometer BTW.

P.S- "05satinGT" that picture of your Cobra in your signature is fantastic!

The best mod is to run a 180* stat in the upper radiator hose. Nothing will help more than that.

This ensure that the coolant coming out of the engine will not be over 185* typically, and will remain more consistent that any post radiator thermostat system (stock style)

It doesn't appear many owners add fans to their afco HE.

Why is that?

This or the CR dual fan HE make a huge difference on the GT500.

Why 180 instead of 170? Sorry for the dumb question - just trying to learn.

I want to keep the stock hood, I took the heat shield off and opened up the hood vents tho. Does anybody have an input on the Venom Coolers? These seem like a mystery mod..I guess almost everything is a mystery when it comes to steig lol.. I will be getting the 170* thermostat for sure, just debating on the last cooling mod ( killer chiller, venom cooler, head cooling mod...or all of them? :p)

Do the head cooling mod and the kc. The 170 thermostat with fan settings makes the most difference. Opening the vents will help with the cabin heat in the summer.

Because a 180-185 stat in the upper hose will run similar temps to that of the 170 stat in the lower hose.

I have done extensive testing on this topic. When you have XXX degree stat in the lower hose, you will let XXX degree coolant into the engine, then you are relying on the engine itself to actually control what temp it decides to run at.

This is why the temp you read from your coolant temp sensors on the crossover tube coming out of the engine, are always higher than the stat temp. If you get a chance, go get your car up to full operating temp, then datalog a full 1/4+ pull, ensure you make a full 4th gear pull. You will notice a drastic raise in temp.

If you put the stat in the upper hose, whatever rating the stat is....it opens at....in turn, your engine will only get as hot as the stat rating.

Simple, very.....yet kind of hard to explain at 7:30 AM.

if you want to keep the stock hood, remove the hood blanket and the factory plastic vents and replace them with an aftermarket billet vent. i can easily see the heat radiate out of the vents now whereas before it was very restricted.

well your car is pretty fine stock (not considerring the famous head cooling mod)....The question is why/what are your reasons for wanting MORE COOLING? Heat is a by product of power so the more HP you make the more heat is coming with it.

Great information so far in this thread. I drilled my thermostat, boxed in my radiator and lengthened and deepened my radiator air dam. My temperature drop was HUGE! (20* if I remember correctly) and total cost was around $50  I also have the even flow head cooling mod. Not sure if I'm a believer in it as I have two friend who beat the hell out of their car and have ZERO cooling mods with no issues. Oddly enough, I'm pretty convinced that the head cooling mod is mostly hype.
