My understanding in talking to a few Leo is highway patrol always has headlights on. Sheriffs have parking lights on. I've never seen anything different. That's around Cincinnati. My understanding is its department or agency controlled.

That's why we have unmarked traffic cars, to see peoples normally, and often bad, driving habits.

I've seen some pretty pathetic excuses of driving from police vehicles. And I've spoken to numerous ones that seem to feel they are above the law and can do what they want.

Needless to say there isn't a "rule" that probably says that have to have their lights on. But I would be willing to bet if you were sitting in a median somewhere with all your lights off and an officer saw you I'll venture a guess to say they'll be less than pleased about it. They'll tell you how dangerous it is, and that you need to have some form of lights on as an indication you're there. Turn the tables to when they're running radar and clearly it seems to be a different story.

No lights need to be on. It's not a law. It's not entrapment. Google the word entrapment and tell me how an officer running speed enforcement with no lights on is "enticing you to commit a crime that you would otherwise not commit" so when an officer parks in a neighborhood and turns his lights off , and sees someone breaking into cars, it's entrapment because the thief didn't see him there?? Negative.

They do have to wear hats when issuing tickets though, otherwise the ticket gets thrown out.

False. Good friend is OSHP and we have had numerous talks about laws. I asked him about this once and in a nutshell...technically, yes, they are not in complete uniform. However, he's seen people try to use that excuse in court to get out of something and he has never seen it work..

They get a solid ass reaming from their Sargent though if they get caught at any time without it on outside the car.

That doesn't surprise me at all. One of the dash cam videos I watched with him he got out and forgot his hat. Turned around about half way to the car he pulled over to get it, then proceeded back to give a ticker...was kind of funny to see.

since we are on the topic of lights and police cars. The local police have small amber lights just behind the grille, some times, i see them mostly on the crown vics and some of the new chargers. Any input on what these are for?

Like i asked before, should we also post schedules of patrol times for neighborhoods to be fair? The difference is we are operating in an official capacity. When a regular joe does it, it appears suspicious since its not a typical sight. Should we also not be able to run emergency traffic to certain calls? Just because you dont like police doesnt mean we shouldnt be able to do what were supposed to do. Maybe we should only run radar while moving because u turns are safer than sitting off the side of the road?

It's only legal if his campaign hat is cocked at a perfect 36 and a half degree downangle, and his dip or chew must be in the left cheek...

This is yet another perfect example of an officer who feels he is above others. I do not dislike police, I dislike many of the lazy, arrogant, lying ones that I have had to deal with in my area. I by no means am bashing any law enforcement officer, I am simply trying to state I think it's a bit obsurd that in this situation they feel it is ok to sit in the median with no lights on but an "average joe" cannot. The last time I checked, we all drive on the same roads, we all have the same rights on these roads, just because you are in a police vehicle doesn't give you anymore rights on that road than I have. Unless of course your lights have been turned on, then I shall graciously pull over and let you pass. If I want to sit in a median and drink a cup of coffee and eat a krispy kreme while jamming out to my favorite radio station I have just as much right to be there as you do, with my lights off of course, don't want to spoil the moment.

My older brother is an Ohio State Trooper, he said they don't have to have any lights on.

This is very correct, Why should they have to have lights on? Noone owes you anything you speed you get caught its your fault. Don't speed and you don't have to worry.

What part of my post gives the impression i think im above others? If someone sees the regular joe sitting in a median it gets your attention. If a construction or public works type vehicle is parked there it doesnt draw attention. Is their official capacity in sitting there also elitist? Btw, if i get pulled over i pull out my ccw, not my badge. Whether anybody likes it or not, officers are exempt from certain statutes deemed fit by law makers. Fbi agents can take firearms places i cant. Is that unfair to me because i have just as much right to the second amendment as them?

Sorry Luke, but this is kind of how it goes. Don't speed and you won't get pulled over. Pretty simple stuff my man.

Pretty sure that was sarcasm.

Wait is this a law that they have to be in complete uniform? If so, it would be odd if the judge did not uphold it.

No, Ohio has no law stating a Police Officer in a marked cruiser must have his lights on when running traffic enforcement.

Some departments like OSP have department policies that state they have to leave their lights on though.

The only law for running traffic in Ohio is it must be a marked cruiser with at least one 360 degree light...no slick tops like in Florida and other states. Now you can still be pulled over by a slick top as long as its primary purpose is not traffic enforcement.
