Well I previously posted that I thought my trans was slipping on the 3-4 shift. Took the pan off today and saw the Trans fluid looked like engine oil, smelt burnt, and I have PIECES of clutch laying in the bottom of the pan. Calling Beefcake now to get the Exedy stage 2, than I have to get them installed. I may pull the trans myself and take it to someone to have the Exedy clutches installed. :cuss:

So what do you guys think caused this? I mean I never hear about anyone burning up the Autos clutches.

I would say to look at the mickey mouse company you have tuning your car. Its definitely a tune issue that caused this.

Please explain how a tune could slip the trans? And judging by the sig this cars built pretty well but hey let's blame the tune that can cause every issue

How many miles on the trans? What converter? How long has the car been high hp? Have you ever changed the fluid? Was the tune set to lock the converter under full throttle?

17k miles on the car. Only about 5000 with the Vortech. Stock converter and I have no idea if it locked the converter @ WOT. 1-2, 2-3 shift real hard so IDK. Went to the track 2 times in the last 4000 miles. I did notice the last time I went the trans felt like it was slipping on the lazy 3-4 shift. I have several posts about this trans problem. It would or shall I say does flare or free rev for a sec in between the 3-4 shift. Even at little to no throttle. I just ordered the Exedy stage 2 from Beefcake so hopefully thats all that is wrong.

I hope so for your wallet's sake. Reusing the converter isn't a viable option in my opinon as well, once all what you see in the pan has made the trip around the transmission.

Also, sometimes a hard shift in a tune is a symptom of gear overlap. I have been in a few tuned 5.0's (including my own) and I wouldn't describe the shifts I've felt as very hard. Especially coming from a 5r55 3v gt.

I read a few of your other threads where you state the car is a daily driver. 17k on stock fluid with a lot of power can cause issues I would imagine. Do you let the car downshift under throttle often?

I'm asking questions for my own sake as well. I know of two other locals who have lost 6r80's, both of which made at or over 600hp for quite a while. It may be just a situation where track passes+power+mileage overcome the design limits.

Damn Shawn , sorry to see this. You are having horrible luck with that car. hopefully its just the clutches and after the upgrade it should be more than up to the job.

Yes this tune shifts hard. But I dont know if thats a problem or not. 12k miles the car was making 400 rwhp. And the last 5k over 600 rwhp. I was also not aware of changing the Trans fluid until at least 30k miles as I baby the car and am driving around not getting any boost 90% percent of the time.

could be over powering the stock clutches but looking at the tune wouldn't hurt, just to be safe i would have the tune looked over. i know when i had my GTO the tuner upped the line pressure with the tune but if i was to ever put a built trans in that car i had to return the line pressure back to stock or run the risk of destroying a built trans.

That will kill any tranny. The more power you make the faster it will burn up.
Not sure though by the pic, is it clumped clit h material or metal chunks?

Tune has plays a major role in keeping these autos reliable...not saying it caused it, but it's worth looking into. Keep us updated. Good luck.

I'm sorry it was the clutches. Kinda figured it was from your last thread but hoped it could be tune related. Doesn't take much "slip" w/600+ hp to burn those clutches that's why they usually set them to shift fast(hard, little slip) with higher hp. If it's any consolation, when you change the clutches/steels and put her back together there will be nothing left to break( :))
