Based on OP's conditions of RWD, Not too Expensive, Easy on gas and new literally his only choice is a BRZ or FR-S. An entry trim WRX couldn't possibly go in there, but while their MSRP isn't terrible, they aren't known for their fuel mileage and they are known for high insurance premiums.

My daily is a Jetta GLI. Fun little car that was cheap, has enough pep and handling capability to be fun and has a lot of creature comforts. I get about 34mpg on regular fuel and it costs lesson than $30.00 to fill up.

A used 11-16 Mustang v6 or 15-16 Eb Mustang maybe be a option depending upon the price. Both are going in the high teens to low twenties.

Other than being wrong wheel drive I love my ST.. I purposely went after a ST1 bc I didn't want the recaro seats. They are uncomfortable on long rides. I average 30mpg and have plenty of pep to do what I want. Usually ~$30 to fill up with 93 octane. Got mine as a pre owned certified for $17k with 22k miles. I'm at 83k miles and all I've done is changed oil, tires, plugs and upgraded brakes to full ceramic and stoptech slotted rotors. Plenty of room to carry a full set of wheels, jack, tools, and a small grill for a day at autocross

Sorry for the late reply, I've been wrapped in a few things. I'm looking in the $16,000 to $20,000 range. I'm looking at just a basic bare bones car with good gas mileage. I don't know all the extras on the interior but do want a nice looking car. I've thus far looked at a Civic hatch (nice looking cars), sportier packaged Sentra, Toyota Im (which was quite nice), regular Civic, KIA Forte SX, Crosstrack from Subaru, Ford Fiesta... The Fiesta was the best price by far but was not happy with the looks and size. I'm just looking at getting something to get me back and forth to work that is reliable.

I've just been looking at new cars and trying to stay away from used cars because I'm fearful of the reliability factor. I don't want to get a used car and have something expensive break on it and be stuck with an expensive bill. But I could go the used car route too, just want something reliable.

Very nice, I do love those cars too and your situation would be perfect for me. That is ideally what I'm looking for.

Lol,
I gave $3500 for an 03 SVTF with 89K miles for my beater.
I put a little TLC in her and right now I'm at 108K and loving it.
Screw 25K for a DD. Never again.

Wow, really? That is awesome. I would love to do somthing like that but again, I just don't want to have to worry if it breaks down.

I decided to buy a regal gs last year that is within your budget. I drove a focus st and wasn't impressed. Cramped inside and too much torque steer for the little car. I always liked the sho but little bigger then I really needed. So instead I got a regal gs 2.0L turbo 270 hp/295 tq, brembos, all your creature comforts, heated seats, nav, etc etc it is fwd but you can them in awd. Some aftermarket parts and tunes are available if you want more HP. Also as mentioned above get an ats they still come in rwd although they have had some engine issues with the newer ones blowing pistons lol

There's a photo of mine. Needs a little lowered, some more HP and different color calipers but overall I've really like it for a good daily!

I went to Buick in my area and they didn't have any of those cars left. Just the SUV's. I don't need the turbo in the car but I do really like those cars. I just need to find a place that has them.

I'm figuring out this multi quote thing, so sorry for the individual replies.... EDIT Crap, a few of my replies didn't submit for some reason. I guess because I didn't use the multiquote.

You should REALLY consider a Lexus IS 350 from 2006 to 2013. Heated/Cooled seats and sunroof are standard, its RWD, has 305hp, and gets over 30mpg. Cheap to insure, too.

And that toyota drivetrain is good to 300K miles if you change the fluids regularly. No timing belt either, as the IS lineup from 2006 on has a timing chain.

Its a lot of car for the money, and is perfect daily beater for the long haul.

^+1 budget.

Does it need to be a sedan/hatch? EB S550?

For under $25K, a Taurus SHO or Lincoln MKS EcoBoost are hard to beat with a tune and are a lot of bang for the buck. If you're stuck on something smaller and more efficient, a newer Mazda 3 would be a solid choice.

Here's my pig. 2012 Lincoln MKS EcBoost with the EAP option. Running a tune/3-bar from Livernois and she moves well.

I will have to take a look at the Mazda 3's for sure. I haven't even thought about those.

I was thinking of just throwing $10,000 at a used car and having little to no monthly payment on it too. I'm not sure what kind of car you can get for that kind of money though. I've mainly been looking at new.

Yeah they don't make a crazy number of them like Civics etc etc but you can get a 12-13 with 30-40k miles in your $16-20k price range sometimes even Buick CPO which gets you an excellent warranty. Oh and it looks better then a civic or Toyota imo

Brz or gt86?

Nah, not a car for me. I already have a Cobra for that.

Yeah, I heard about newer cars not having timing chains. That is certainly a great. I love those cars and want to look at some. I just want to keep the price low.

Can't go wrong w/a Civic or Accord. My wife has an '11 Accord w/130k on it and it still drives like new- awesome, dependable car.

For me tho, I'd get a '15-17 Volkswagen GTI- bee's knees of small cars, lots of pep, performance and utility.
Lee

I love those cars but I've heard so many horror stories with Volkswagen having electrical and other tiny problems with it.

We picked up a 2016 Honda Civic EX-T last June for the wife's work car. Great new styling, 1.5L Turbo with digital display, 30/42 gas mileage, FWD, and good resale. I am impressed with the car so far...as little as I get to drive it.

I looked at the Civic's last night and really liked them. The new '17 hatch is a great car and after looking at the hatch I couldn't get over how much more I liked it over the sedan.

I would love to do that for sure. I just want something reliable and not have to worry about replacing parts and fixing stuff.

How many miles do you drive a year, and whats the most amount of miles you are willing to have on a car?

My 2010 Focus has 154k miles on it, and the only issue I had was a bad COP/ broken spark plug. Stay away from 2011-2015 ish focus automatics with the DCT though.

Stay away from automatic fiesta too, and well fiesta in general, we got rid of ours as it was just far too tight to do anything. The auto never failed but it would stutter bad when hot. Now rocking a 15 focus ST and has tons of rear leg room and the way it drives is simply exciting for a DD. Gas mileage has been identicle to the fiesta

I don't put many miles on a car. I'm not sure the average but I would say 10,000 or less. If I got a used car I would like them to be really low, like 10,000 to 20,000 miles.

In a perfect world I would get a nice looking, reliable car and pay cash for it so I didn't have to worry about car payments.

And yeah, I heard about the autos in those things, just forgot the years they had the messed up transmissions. So given the cost of the newer ones and that issue I guess it isn't likely I would get a Focus. I just thought they transmissions were only affected for 2 model years.

I bought a Subaru Crosstrek two years ago. Absolutely amazing car that gets good gas mileage, and has plenty of room. I think I got a good deal on it, 26k out the door new. They have used ones that are cheaper obviously. Once I get about 150k on this one, Im going to buy another one. Its at 58,000 miles already. We drive it everywhere.

I looked at those Crosstreks too and liked them. The new ones weren't too bad on price either. A very practical car. I hear they have amazing reliability too.

That is great to know, because I looked at one yesterday and it was by far the best price of all the newer cars I looked it. I wasn't sold on the looks but the price was very tempting for me. I was kicking around the idea of those Sonics for CHevy but have no clue about those.

For under $20k new, you can't beat a Civic Hatchback LX with the manual transmission.

If you went for a Focus ST, you would have a manual which has no problems.

Driving less than 10k miles a year, you could buy a civic or something with 50k miles on it, and have 5+ years before you need to worry about replacing the timing belt for preventative maintanance at 100k. Many cars last 150k+ easy. Especially non-turbo ones.

Yeah, they are hard to beat for sure. Good reliability and hold their value well.....too well in fact lol. I was looking at some used '15's and 14's and they were extremely close in price to the '17 and '16 models. It didn't really make sense for me to get a used one when just a couple thousand you can get brand new.

Yeah, I love the ST's but I'm going more practical this time around. I was just thinking about the regular Focus if I did go that route. And from what I'm seeing in the other cars, manuals are becoming harder and harder to find. I'm not against autos but so many of them can go wrong.
