How do I make my rear end look attractive? ;-)

So I just bought a Roush 2010 Mustang GT. It's in great shape but the rear end housing has surface rust on it (pic below). I guess Ford never painted these or anything?

Is there anything I can do (short of taking it out and sandblasting/painting) to make it look better? I plan on taking the car to some local shows.

Thanks for some tips and tricks!

you can use POR15 paint it neatly

Can the POR15 be applied directly over the surface rust? Thanks

Why worry about it.....it's not visible when the car's on the ground!!o_O

Yeah, I agree, but often times folks do take a quick peek underneath and I want it to look goooooooooood.............. :) If you're taking a car to a show, it just can't have any rust on it anywhere IMHO.

Yes apply POR then once dry, apply your desired black finish after, to avoid por from peeling

Hey, thanks man, where in RI you located? Do you go to many shows or cruise nights? It's been a while since I had a car worthy of cruise nights, so I gotta get myself reacquainted with the cruise night scene.

Here's my car. Kinda plain looking. Called a "Hammer". It's Roush's version of a 'sleeper'.

As far as car shows go, if your car is really a contender on the inside, outside and engine bay, they will most certainly get down and dirty, to scope out your rear. They will also check out the wheel wells and under the front end too.

Yeah, thanks man, this is what I needed to hear, haha. The rest of the car is close to new, but a few of the bare metal places underneath have that surface rust.

I was kinda hoping something like that rust converter in the spray can might work. But I suppose the only 'real' way to do it is to remove rear housing from car and clean/paint.

Thanks

You can get by this season with the products from Eastwood. After the season is over, you can detail the shit out of it, over the winter. Powder coating and chrome give the Judges a hardon.

Unless someone knows something that i don't "if so please chime in" the only way to do it right is to take it out. If you use por "paint over rust" it will look terrible. You have to sand or use some type of aggregate blast to make it look right. There are some rust agents out there that work but you would still need to sand or smooth it before painting. I wish it were that easy.

Now you can spray the rust chemical on and it will remove the rust but you will be left with bare metal.

Hey, maybe I can get the seller to do it for me (take it out, sandblast & paint). I'll have to ask...... ;)

Beat me too it...first thing i thought.

Like some said the best way is to remove, sand, primer and paint. For your primer I would use a primer sealer and then just paint on top of that with VHT roll bar/chassis black.. only reason I would use that BHT is because of the Heat

Brake caliper enamel works well and can be applied right over light surface rust. You still want to prep the surface with light brushing and brake cleaner before priming it, but that stuff holds on extremely well and looks great.
