Depends. Not always true.Learn to browse smarter. The only thing anti-virus does is self destruct and take your computer down with it thus creating the same problem you installed anti-virus to try and avoid.
It is very possible (not recommended for most) If you run certain commands frequently and monitor inbound/outbound connections, you can. Also, a good hacker can mitigate an AV.So you run a PC with no anti-virus at all?
Defender has improved significantly over the years. Good post.#1 is smart browsing, and don't click sh*t. I'm supposedly a security professional, so I'll chime in.
I use Windows Defender for general malware, EMET for other security holes (more info HERE on EMET), and the best software for removing general adware and most annoyances is Malwarebytes (free version). Also leave Windows Firewall enabled.
Very, very rarely are you going to get infected/compromised from out of nowhere. If you did it's because someone else on your network broke rule #1. If you're not on the network, then it's because you broke rule #1.

We've used Norton/Symantec, McAfee and hated them.
There are still viruses that infect Macs.Buy a Mac.
