I am not one of the live in fear folks. It's common sense to me. 9 times out of 10, it's kids selling candy or the idiots selling meat from a van here. I live in a good area, though. YMMV. *I* just don't want to be bothered with nonsense. I'm an introvert, though, so you might be talking to the wrong guy. ;)

Not venturing out of the house is a whole different thing. The problem we have is the treatment, or lack thereof actually, of mental health issues. Fix that and these mass shootings and such drop dramatically.
1 out of 10 people that come to your door try to kill you? Rough neighborhood...

I've had similar situations where the USPS (GPS verified) said the post man delivered said package to me only to have it a few houses away or a few streets away. Like you, I've heard the verbal confirmation of it being satellite proven only to have someone pull a homer and mess things up.

It’s been established that didn’t happen to the OP. Not sure why you’re still appearing to defend the ****ing crooks who tried to steal his daughter’s Christmas presents.

Technically, no theft occurred.

Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?
A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift.

Q. Must I notify the seller if I keep unordered merchandise without paying for it?
A. Although you have no legal obligation to notify the seller, you may write the seller and offer to return the merchandise, provided the seller pays for shipping and handling.

How is keeping something that someone else paid for & ordered, and their name is on the shipping label, not theft? We've all gotten packages for other people. I never keep whatever it is.

You’re no Johnnie Cochran. Lol

That’s applicable only to UNORDERED merchandise.

Examples directly from your link:

...You respond to an advertisement offering a free "trial" pair of pantyhose. To your surprise, you receive four pairs with a bill.

...You receive a pocket knife that you never ordered. Despite your objections, the company continues to send you notices demanding payment and threatening your credit rating.

Well I'm sure it's just covering the people who could keep someone else's package by mistake. For example, maybe they got the package and didn't open it until a few months after they received it.

So, did the "crooks" order the merchandise?

Lol

I’m really starting to think you’d also keep the packages and lie about it.

Do you even understand the information you linked?

I gave examples.....do you need drawings?

Neither are you. Someone (woman in question) delivering misdirected or wrongly delivered packages after the fact does not prove they were "crooks."

You're absolutely right. The was proven when it was confirmed they had the packages, lied about having them, and only returned them after it appeared they were about to be in legal trouble.

Refresher in case you forgot.....

Update:

So, if anyone cares, miraculously, the people who live at my prior address delivered the packages today. There was no explanation.

I suspect they were contacted by someone. I contacted USPS to file a mail theft claim. My mom also contacted Amazon to see if anything could be done, and they opened their own investigation. I have a feeling one of them contacted these people, and they suddenly grew a conscience. Regardless of the reason, it basically proves they lied to me originally, and had the packages all along.
