When I was a boy I would stand behind my grandad while he shaved with a straight razor, in his muscle shirt. He had a big chunk of meat missing from his right shoulder blade. One day I asked him what happened. Without stopping, still looking straight ahead in the mirror, he said,"A German sniper tried to take my head off." Then he stopped, turned his head around grinning at me and said, "He missed, didn't he?"

He said they were near a town in France called Bouresches. He talked about the mustard gas, and how they advanced through the woods. Years later I learned he was with 80th Co, 2nd Battalion, Sixth Marines, at the Battle of Belleau Wood. I had no idea until I was grown what that meant.

Those guys were all heroes. They blessed our country, and Europe, with their blood.

Here's to them.
