You don't. To deter thieves either hide it when you are are gone, or get a locking file cabinet to slow them down. Why does one need a gun safe? I understand if you have kids but I live alone.

Wait 5 years and then ask the question again. Why does one need a gun safe? I understand if you have kids but I live alone.
Ah. So it becomes an addiction....Wait 5 years and then ask the question again.
Actually I won't do that to you. I say that because every single person in your position, myself included, thought you might like a little something for the home or the range etc. Up until about 10 years ago, all I had was a few hand me downs, .22 rifle and pistol, crack barrel shotgun. Fast forward and I've had a safe crammed full of rifles and pistols. Unfortunately, all my firearms were lost in a tragic boating accident.

All of the above is the only correct answer.I would post a pic of my gun but don't own one. Never held or fired one. I'm looking to purchase for home protection though. Thoughts on what to get? Shotgun? Revolver or automatic?
Unless you want a good all around handgun. Then this is solid advice.Glock 19

Definitely dont listen to the "no question" part of this. There are many questions for what could work best for your home defense situation. Personally, I have never been a fan of shotguns for HD especially in apartment type dwellings. They are a reasonable choice though, in general.Purely for home protection? Shotgun no question.
Want something for home protection that you can also carry and have fun with at the range? Glock 17/19 or Sig 226/229. These are like ford and chevy, guys that shoot glocks think they are best while guys that shoot sigs like them best. Of course they are both wrong since 1911s are best.
I would avoid revolvers. They have their place but are a poor choice for defense and are tougher to shoot well than autos IMO.
Dont listen to these amateurs. You dont need a safe. Why does one need a gun safe? I understand if you have kids but I live alone.

It does, LOL. It's a Kriss Vector Airsoft. Nice.Pretty neat. Looks like an assault stapler.
Nothing like a gun passed down from father to son to son. That’s bad ass man!Just put some (more) new shoes on dad's Colt to gift one of the boys at graduation in a couple of months. Reblued the kydex scuffs in the slide from running it in a few matches last year. I think the boy will like it.

Thanks. He said he was going to tuck it away and not shoot it, to which I replied, "PFFFT. It ain't no collector grade 1911! It just a pretty pistol that I fixed up that belonged to your granddad with the same name."Nothing like a gun passed down from father to son to son. That’s bad ass man!

I had the slide dovetail cut by Novaks to replace the GI sights, and I cut the frame tangs myself to fit a Wilson upswept beavertail, replacing the old duckbill grip safety. Also has a Wilson thumb safety I fit, and a S&A magwell I installed.
I told him to plan to shoot the snot out of it.
He's driving up from school to shoot a match with me tomorrow. He asked if I'd have this pistol with me. I said, "Nope, when you graduate in May you get it."
Thanks. The sentimental value is higher than the street value for sure. I think I spent $600 in Wilson parts and Novaks services with sights, plus whatever time I have in it which is probably about what a rattly Colt of this era is worth. In fact that's exactly what dad paid for it new 25 years ago. I have the receipt. That is super cool. When you are gone you will still be with him everytime he shoots it.
I wish that I had just one of my grandfather's guns. I don't even own a photo of either grandfather. My dad sold everything of value he owned due to addiction.Thanks.
