I sold my Ducati 848 a few days ago via fleabay...got wayyyy more than I expected for it but it was mint with low miles and with great mods (termi, custom tune, new tires, fresh fluids etc).
So I was on the hunt again for a sport bike and stumbled across a 2016 Honda CBR 1000 RR SP...the repsol bike. Asking 11,900.
I bought my xdiavel from the same dealer selling the cbr and decided to give him a call...the cbr only had 700 miles on it and had a full yoshi exhaust. Online the pictures looked great (as always) but being that the dealer was a gruelling 1.5 hours away (all traffic) I told my sales guy to go check it out for me.
He called me back not long after and told me the bike was pretty clean but had been dropped on the right side. Fairing would need to be replaced. He came down 1500 off the price...a quick look online showed me that fairing was much less than that.
I called Uber and away I went to go buy the bike.
Upon arrival at the dealer I noticed a pretty good crowd around my bike. It was outside so I could check it out and so was everyone else. I walked up and noticed people pointing at certain things...after looking I noticed the damage was much more than the dealer told me. Here is what I saw...
1. The fairing was just as he described (and sent pics)
2. The exhaust was damaged from the drop
3. The heat shield to the exhaust was missing a hanger
4. The beautiful swingarm had a scratch from where the exhaust hit it
5. The right side mirror was scratched from the fall
6. The brake lever was scratched from the fall
7. PO installed a tail tidy and had sloppy wires all around the dash (wasnt done professionally)
8. The rear cowl was missing the lock for the key to go into, it would come off but you had to put your finger inside the hole and push the lever
9. Small hairline crack in the front headlight fairing
10. Left side fairing had a tab snapped off and was not fitting properly
11. Left side clutch lever small scratch
12. Missing screws in some areas of the bike
13. Miscellaneous scratches from wherever the PO tried to do ANYTHING...
So now I was in a dilemma...walk away and spend another 60 bucks getting home with Uber OR attempt to negotiate on something that is gonna require some work...
The salesguy came out and saw I was there...he could tell I was not happy. I then went through what I just described above and he apologized profusely. He told me he knew the PO and the guy owned over 7 bikes and he could not see all that damage as it was beside all the other used bikes...He was being honest with me.
He then told me to give him ANY number and he would make it work....hmmmm...so I told him to give me 5 minutes to think. The bike was already priced very well...a 2016 CBR 1000RR SP with only 700 miles...he came down from 11900 to 10400 because of the fairing.
I decided to offer 8500 or walk. He agreed to that price.
All the bikes you buy from this dealer have a full 30 day warranty...so from a mechanical perspective I felt good, but I had not ridden it yet. With such low miles and things looking mostly cosmetive I decided to roll the dice, even though I had a 1.5 hour ride home.
Signed my life away and off I went! Less than a mile from the dealer I could tell this bike was running EXCELLENT. Steered straight, handled great and holy shit the sound and power. Just superb as any honda should be! Smooth as butter.
Once I got home I went through the bike as best I could. Took off the fairings, lots of damage under the right side, but nothing too bad, just clips and whatnot...a few loose bolts on some areas of the bike the PO had dealt with but no leaks and mostly clean.
My biggest concern is the nose doesnt seem like it's lining up the left and right fairings perfectly...But I am going to dig into that tomorrow and see if something is bent etc.
I was able to go on revzilla and pull up a parts list, looks like with the exhaust i'll be about 1500 into this thing really quickly...haha. That price includes replacing both fairings and the nose fairing. I think I'll be able to salvage the nose fairing, even though there is a hairline crack.
My question to all of you is should I even attempt all of this myself or should I have a shop do it? What am I looking for in the nose to see if everything is lining up correctly? Where is the best place to get parts? How should I go about making this Honda pretty enough to show Marc Marques if he stopped by? Ha.
