Keep in mind it does take like 6-8 weeks if I’m not mistaken before your body is even fully into ketosis.

from all I’ve looked into, this is one of few diet approaches that is science backed and shows to be great for long term use. I’ve debated giving it a whirl not for weight loss but more for the mental sharpness and energy stabilization that comes with it. Generally I run a very high carb based diet so it’ll be interesting to see how this differs.

there are a couple good joe Rogan pod casts with Dom D’Agostino and one with both Dom and Layne Norton that have gobs of great info on keto and also debating keto vs flexible dieting. Both these guys have plenty of credibility and are very knowledgeable in not only nutrition but applying it as well with bodybuilding and power lifting.

When I first started, it took maybe 2 weeks to get into ketosis. Now I can go from vacation in Italy back to ketosis in anywhere from 4 days to a week.

I know there are some downsides to the Keto diet, but I have successfully done it "loosely" for 3+ years.

I'm 46 years old now. From age 20 to age 43, I worked out most every day, including some weights and lots of long distance running . . . and I was always chubby. There were times that I fluctuated, but I never really got down to my "ideal" weight. At age 43, I could run 2 miles in 12 minutes and 5 miles in 33 minutes . . . and I was still closing in on 220 lbs at only 5'10" tall. I was a great example of "you can't out-exercise a bad diet."

In mid-2016, I started hitting the weights more and cut back my running to a few times a week. At the same time, I upped my protein intake and, by doing so, stumbled into a low-carb diet. It was then that my body responded. By October 2016, I was at 175 lbs, and I have maintained it since.

Truth told, I doubt I'm ever in keto anymore; I just stay away from sugar, breads, starches, etc. I simply live a low-carb lifestyle, and the key was TEACHING MY BODY TO BURN FAT FOR FUEL, NOT CARBS. My sister has since become a licensed nutritionist, and she very much believes in a paleo/keto type of lifestyle . . . though she's pretty critical of the "unnatural" protein bars and protein shakes that have become a staple of my diet, LOL.

Take it for what its worth.

I bet that's the source of your issues, blood glucose being borderline can definitely cause you some trouble with weight. Did they check IGF as well?
I just went on Tricare and pulled up the labs from my August physical and Insulin Growth Factor was not listed as something they measured. I'm assuming this was because my insulin level was still within "normal" standards just at the very high end of normal so they didn't feel it was necessary to check IGF. These are military contracted PA's we're talking about here ya know...:D

As far as getting into ketosis... I'm using the urine test sticks which I understand are not the most accurate, but it took me about 9 days before they registered a deep purple color indicating I was in ketosis.

If I could find a way to lose about 25 pounds (or gain muscle and lose the gut/a cups) I’d probably be pleased.

i just don’t know how to stop eating. It’s fun.

bored? Eat
Hungry? Eat
Something smells good? Eat
Like what I’m eating? Eat triple

(drink could go where eat is every time... i should cut that back too)

I did keto for a little over 2 months last year and dropped 20lbs and kept it off. I only stopped because I developed a huge rash across my chest which I found out is called keto rash and its a rare reaction some people have to not having carbs. After introducing carbs back into my diet it went away in 2 days after being there for 2 weeks.

From what I've read that is usually a one time reaction so I'm going to try keto again in a few weeks and see if I can get another 20lbs off.

Since I rarely read the online messages from my doctor, I found out Friday that I have finally tipped the scales enough to have Type 2 Wilford Brimley disease. Apparently, I've been that way since summer.....

So, of course, it's back to dieting, and I guess once I'm back down to a weight where it doesn't cause me to choke a lung out, I'll resume a bit of exercise.

In the meantime, I'm eating about 1200 calories a day and get to shoot myself up with Ozempic. Supposedly, it will help keep my blood sugar under control with the added benefit of slowing down digestion which helps me not get hungry so fast and should result in some help in weight loss.

Started it the day after labor day at 236 lbs, reached 199 on Christmas Eve, started eating more balanced over the holidays. That was 37lbs down in 16 weeks with minimal effort. If I start getting puffy again I'll do Keto for a few weeks as needed. edit: I targeted 1400 calories a day which is a pretty big deficit, which I didn't always hit, and I fasted intermittently sometimes. But I never went more than 2 days without whiskey after the first 2 weeks.

Don't much care about muscle mass either. I'm a 57-year old IT guy who sits in front of a PC for 12 hours or more a day.

Uncle Meat, I think you, and most people with sedentary jobs, could benefit from 30 minutes of light cardio 4 or 5 times a week. Also, a little muscle on your frame could help burn some calories. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym or be a bodybuilder. Just food for thought. Please keep us updated on your diet and progress. I don’t think I would have the willpower for that diet.

All you Keto diet people keep saying you lost weight, but we need to know where you started.

we are adults, there’s no body shaming up in here.

I’m just curious what kind of improvements people around my weight can see in a few months.

you simply don’t eat enough and likely don’t support your diet with nutrient dense food sources that can help aid in overall growth and recovery.

The process is simple though, caloric surplus- gain weight, deficit- lose weight. Railing macros around what a given personal nutritional and performance demands are with in that total caloric structure will aid in growth of muscle tissue in conjunction with exercise.

keto alone won’t always just net you a weight loss if you aren’t first cognizant of how much you should be eating.

that said on average meat and fat carry with it pretty good satiety vs general carbs that people intake so most do see an initial drop in weight as their appetite decreases.
