i broke my collar bones several times, my worst was mountain biking i was showing off flying down the the hill past a group of other bikers and this simple 4' drop i went over at the moment of impact i knew i broke it 2 spots, problem being i had another few miles of downhill left i did pedal most of the way out...The one thing the doctors f'd up when they set it they put the wrong sling on and it healed all jacked up. They told me to fix it they would need surgery to break it again i passed on it but it still jacked up.
over all it did not take long to heal it was a few weeks of sleeping on the recliner though before i could sleep on the bed. then a few more weeks for rehab i was riding in a little over 2 months.

edit : actually now i remember what happened i saw the group starting the downhill section and i did not stop to put my seat down cause i wanted to pass on the jumps , so i couldn't get over the tire.

I will have to wait and see what he says about the brace as this is all new to me. I have the x-rays on a disc they gave me but I cant save them to my computer or I would post them up.
I am just concerned about how much work I am going to have to miss. I work in a lab so I need alot of range of motion but dont lift much weight.

i imagine you won't miss much work at all. you'll just have some limitation for a week or so, reaching overhead cabinets. most breaks in the middle 1/3 of the clavicle do not need surgery. if you can figure out how to post the x-rays, go ahead and post them.

Talk to FISHTAIL on here. I had the pleasure of riding behind him and watching him flip over the handlebars of his mtn bike and break his collar bone in 2 places. Because the bone was just floating around in his shoulder, it wouldn't heal and he needed surgery to impant a Ti rod. He was out for months, but mostly because he didn't get the surgery until way after the accident.

broke mine when I was 10...still have a lump where it broke! I think it was about 6-8 weeks I was in a figure-8 harness around my shoulders pulliing them back to set the bone back together....IT HURT LIKE SH&T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You never realize how many movements involve the muscles and bones around your collar bone....

My buddy in high school broke his collar bone snowboarding. He said it was terrible pain, and at the time he was 17, and the hospital couldn't reach his parents to administer any pain medicine. He had to wait a couple of hours before anything to help with the pain.

I laughed my ass off at him, and then later that week dislocated my shoulder while snowboarding. Screwed up some ligaments, and still get pain in it 4 years later.

I seprated my collar bone (stage 3 but not poking out of the skin) a couple years ago. Crashed my quad going over a razorback that I never saw coming. Hurt like hell to pull or push anything especially if it was above my head. Took a few weeks to get better with the pain but it goes away fairly quickly. Benchpress felt really wierd for well over a year. Just had no stability in that joint what so ever. Now I'm left with a cool griniding noise when I rotate my shoulder around in circles and extereme intense pain for a few moments upon waking if I fall asleep with my arm under my head while laying on my side. In all it's really not all that bad though. I'm sure I'll have arthritis something fierce when I get older but for now I don't really notice it much anymore. Once it scars up you should be good to go.

i broke mine a few years ago ridding dirt bike, i was by my self doing to some early morning trail ridding (my ridding buddies were hung over and didn't want to go). i was about 3 miles from where we were staying at when i put the bike into a tree. luckily the only thing that happened to the bike was a minor bend in the handle bars, my problem was i had a broken collar bone and had to ride 3 miles back to the cabin. the hardest part was getting the bike started and working the clutch. once i got back to the cabin and woke everyone up i passed out. woke up in the hospital.

The worst part about breaking a collar bone is that once you do it, the risk of doing it again is greatly increased. Something about it's difficult to get them heal back to the strength they were at before the injury.

The last time I broke my collarbone was in Jackson MI racing BMX. Can you believe the ambulance crew tried to tell me it was just a dislocated shoulder and then they attempted to pop it back in.... ASSHOLES! Man I screamed like a little bitch!

I probably would have punched him in the face with my other free arm!

that would have almost certainly healed without surgery, but you were probably back to normal activities faster with the surgery. the problem with doing surgery on these breaks, is that there's very, very large blood vessels right under the clavicle--and if you puncture them, you're f'd. also, if the plate gets infected, the bone will take forever to heal, and the plate has to be removed. there's also a scar. you can also break the clavicle at the end of the plate. i wouldn't routinely remove the plate unless its bothering you---if you remove it, the bone is susceptible to re-fracturing for 6-8 weeks.

many people think that once a bone breaks, it will always be weak even once it heals---this is not really true in most cases.

Mine is not pulled apart like that. It is still somewhat in line. So mine I would think would heal back ok. I tried again to get the pics to save but still couldnt figure it out.

^this. It was the most painful thing i've ever experienced and the most annoying injury to date aswell. I was playing soccer when I was a little kid and went in for a slide to get the ball away from the opposing offender...which i did, however he being a much wider player than i, he didn't have the reaction time to react and thus fell on top of me with his shoulder plunging into my collarbone.

Your going to HATE seatbelts
