I've been looking to get a second key made for my mustang so I called a guy I know at the Ford dealer and he got me two new keys for free. He dropped them off to me today at work and I'm suppose to go up there Wednesday and have them programmed.

However the keys he gave me today aren't like the key I have for my 2001 Mustang. They appear to the key used on the 2005-Later mustangs, however this key has been used on the Taurus since like 2000. Does it matter that the key is different? Will this thing program just fine? I would hate if he wasted two keys since he's hooking me up for free

We need a little better description.

Is it the metal portion of the key itself that is different? If so them it won't work. The new key must have the same profile as the key being duplicated.

If it is the head (black plastic part) of the key that is a different shape you may be fine. I don't know of any way to check the RFID module in the plastic head except by trying to program it.

Metal part is the same, in fact they are already cut. They work the doors and the ignition but they just aren't programmed yet. So it's the plastic head on it that is different. I go up there Wednesday for the program.

you should be able to program them yourself IF you have two previously (factory, or aftermarket) programmed keys.. just follow the instructions you can find online, or maybe in the owners manual.

If I had two I wouldn't need a "second" key

The guy gave me two of the bottom ones. How can he screw this up when he had all my information including VIN?

Just follow up, you guys were right. I walked next door today to eat lunch while they programmed the keys and the guy came walking over and handed me the keys and said I now have an expensive set of door keys. He cut me two correct keys and had them programmed. So I got 4 keys for 0$. I should have tried my luck for some free fobs
