Hi there, I'm trying to plan a trip to the East Coast in August as I've never been. Will be flying from California into Boston, MA and then drive up to Montpellier, VT. I want to check out the scenic roads and such. Will also want to rent a fun car (RWD coupe, manual preferred but willing to try a DCT) to do the drive. Timeline is 7-10 days total.

Tips and recommendations?

If you join Hertz member program you can rent anything from a Mustang to a Bentley. It's somewhat affordable and when I looked the promotion was cheap, unnoticeable billing wise.

sub'n for more info on Turo

Its a rental website where personal owners put their own cars for rent. I have used it a couple of times. You can rent anything from a civic to a rolls royce. Its pretty cool.

Nice. I've gotta see what they have to offer. Want to try something that's not a Mustang.

Checked out Turo but they didn't have a good selection for the dates I'm planning. Hopefully it's updated often and may change as we get closer to August.

One question. Why Montpelier? Downtown Burlington/ Church St. is far nicer.

Staying with a family friend who lives close to Montpelier. I'm assuming we'll check out Burlington as well.

Hmm, that is interesting. I will have to check that out as well.

I'd also go to New Hampshire and do the Kangamangus highway. Pretty fun in a sports car and Great views. And Waterbury isn't far from Montpelier, Which is the Ben and Jerry's ice cream headquarters. They do factory tours and taste testing.

Thank you! Was hoping someone would chime in with roads to take.

Ben & Jerry's tour is definitely on my list of things to do.

Still no luck with renting a fun car as yet. Hoping to drive a FRS/BRZ/GT86, Miata or something similar. Just to get a different feel from my '99 Mustang GT.

Also just up the road from Ben and Jerry's is the town of Stow, lots of antique stores and apple themed gift shops.

An awesome road is Rt 100. It starts in Waterbury and runs south thru the mountains, along a river, all the way south to the Mass border.

If you've never been on an Alpine slide, there's one in stow but the best one is in Bromley Vt. It's the longest and fastest one in North America, with full banked curves and long straightaways. You take chairlift to the top of the mountain and then get on these little sleds that you control and ride a track down to the bottom.

I live just outside Burlington so if you have any activities you enjoy, I can give some suggestions. As mentioned above, Stowe has some nice attractions and there is Cold Hollow Cider Mill that is famous for fresh cider doughnuts. Cabot also has a gift shop near there as well. Take Rt.100 to Rt.108 in Stowe and enjoy some some intense switchbacks up the mountain. In Burlington, Church St is pretty nice and there are several breweries in the area. If you need a hotel, the Hotel Vermont is excellent and right by the lake. There is also a restaurant near there called Hen of the Wood. It's been amazing every time I've been there.

My wife and I have vacationed in the Waterbury, VT area a few times, but never heard of the Hen of the Wood restaurant. So I went to their website and OMG, the sample menu is outstanding. Thanks for the heads up on that one. It's on my list of places to visit.

Try to make reservations early if you go, it's always a full house. Also, let me know if you are definitely going. If my wife's friend is working, I can probably get you at least a $50 discount.
