I know a bunch of you guys are like me and love watching Forged in Fire. For me, my interest in knife making started about 8 years ago with a video on Youtube called "The Birth of a Tool." A couple years ago, I decided to give it a try, just doing basic stock removal. Not wanting to sink a lot of money into a hobby I wasn't sure about, I went with a minimalist approach: some files, a bench vise, some sandpaper, and a couple bars of good steel. I had a blast making my first few knives, but anybody who has ever made a knife using only files can tell you it's A LOT of filing.

Here's my first couple knives, made out of 1084 and hours upon hours of filing.

This past summer, like many of us, I found myself with some extra time on my hands. I decided making knives was something I wanted to actually devote some time, money, and effort into. I bought a 2x72" belt grinder and some other miscellaneous tools, built a mini forge to do my own heat treating, and started experimenting with different handle materials and grinds. I'm having more fun than ever, and just looking to get better and better with each batch.

Here's the latest ones that are almost finished (just need edges) that I'm making for my kids and wife. These are made out of 1/4" 80CrV2 with custom resin and stabilized wood scales.

I feel like I've come a long way, but I still have a long way to go. I learn more and more with every knife I make.

Any other knife makers out there? Whether you're just starting out, thinking about starting, or are a pro with years of experience under your belt, I thought this might be a place to share pics of your work.

That’s awesome! I was following in your exact same foot steps a few years back and tutored under a local knife maker. Unfortunately due to starting my own business I had to devote my extra time to other ventures. It’s definitely something I’d like to take back up when the time presents it’s self.

That said I’m currently in the market for a hunter/skinner blade with quality steel. Shoot me a PM so we can chat.

Nice work! I can put an edge on a hoe with a file, but that's it, LOL.

I've actually wanted to start a business making/marketing/selling semi-custom knives, but I have way too much on my plate right now as it is.

I've actually sold several thus far, but I keep telling myself that selling them is a perk, and not the goal. I enjoy the creative bits too much to start making them to customer specs. The knives in the bottom pic up there are the design I came up with after making 20+ one-offs of different sizes, blade shapes, handle shapes, etc. Once I made something I really liked, I called up New Jersey Steel Baron and got them to start waterjet cutting the blanks for me.

I like being able to choose what type of grind I'm going to do, whether I'm going to do any jimping, false edges, texturing, picking out handle scales, choosing the finish, etc. Seeing it all come together at the end is very rewarding. They're not to everyone's taste, but that's okay. If I sell a few and it helps fund the hobby, that's just icing on the cake. :)

If you don't mind me asking, how much are you getting for them?

Don't mind at all.

So that model is 9" OAL, with a ~4" blade. 1/4" 80CrV2 stock. With simple G10 handle scales and a simple Kydex sheath, I charged $100 each. For the hybrid resin/wood scales, I'd have to charge about $150 just because I have more money (and a good bit more time) tied up in the handles.

All told, for a simple finish (i.e. not Cerakoted) and G10 handle scales, I've got around $65 in materials in each knife. And 6+ hours...

Those last four semi-finished are really nice. You obviously are learning the craft well. Nice work!

Very cool. Amazing progression. I’ve done several monthly subscriptions (tac pac, battle box, bespoke), and whenever there’s a knife in the box it’s definitely the highlight. If you ever get into higher production, these subscription services would be all over your knives

That seems like extremely fair pricing.
