I was out with the family taking our dogs for a walk two days ago. Everything was going great and had no problems at all. Suddenly, my older dog who is (14), didnt want to walk anymore, she just laid down on her side and she had a bunch of drool coming from her mouth. I tried to get her up but she just wouldnt move. I let her lay there for about 5 minutes thinking she was just tired from the walk, although we had not gone that far. After that 5 minutes she didnt get any better so I carried her to the car which like 100 yards away and we rushed her to the vet.

Several test later (X-rays, ultra sound, blood work, etc) they say that they cannot find anything wrong with her. No cancer, blood work came back fine, etc. Our other option was to keep her there overnight for observation and see what happens. My wife and I thought, no way, she is coming home, and if she is going to pass away it will be with us.

The past two days she has just laid in bed and only got up to go to the restroom. She has eaten a little bit but not much. I fear that old age is finally getting to her and she doesnt have many days left. Literally, the day before this happened she was running around and playing without a care in the world.

So, if you have a pet, give them some extra love tonight as things can turn around on a moments notice.

Sorry, to hear about this. Hope her remaining time is painless.
I completely understand. My Aussie wasn’t even 7 years old when I lost him to a brain tumor in March.
Today could be the last day you have. Love them as if you won’t have them tomorrow.

Been there a handful times. Really sucks how they can go from normal to knowing it's their time.

Other dogs sense it too.

One of my dogs was near that stage. They dug a hole and laid there till they went.

I'm sorry to hear OP.

Yes! My other dog doesnt want to go in the same room/sleep with the older dog. They used to sleep on one bed together.

Sorry man, the older I get the more I hate people and love dogs. I let one of ours out at 0400 about a year and a half ago to use the restroom and she died before she hit the ground. I tried for 15 minutes to resuscitate her but no luck. She had also been having seizures and and fainting spells when overly excited. I think her heart finally gave out in the end. She had water all around her abdomen. Could litterally pat her and feel her ripple. She had been on meds for a while to curb it but it was her time. Her sister is still going but sleeps alot, her time will come in the next year or two I fear. Good luck with yours, maybe just not feeling well. Let's hope that's all.

Very sorry to hear that she might have only a short time left. That was good that you brought her home vs. staying at the vet's. I believe she wanted to be with you just as much as you both wanted to be with her.

As I was reading your post, an L.L.Bean commercial was playing on the tv. It made me think of your own pup and how special she is to you.

Here's the commericial.

And some funny and warm outtakes. I hope this one helps you remember all the fun times you have had with your pup. Dogs are so wonderful! So yeah, give your pets an extra hug of love today.

hah! Great commercial. I was pretty set in my ways of getting a purebred dog. However, my wife convinced me to get a pound pup, so we did, and got her 10 years ago. So happy we made that choice.

OP, sorry to hear this, hopefully she comes out of it.

Our oldest Dane is around 10 years old and really starting to show his age. He used to sleep with us in the bed but a few months ago starting going downstairs and sleeping by himself on a couch. Our other Dane still sleeps beside our bed. I can see the writing on the wall but I don't want to think about it.

I feel your pain. Several years ago my family had a west highland terrier. Extremely energetic and lovable dog. Played with the dog for like a hour one night and she was happy and spunky as could be. The following morning as I’m leaving for work I notice she didn’t get up to say hi to me. Didn’t think much of it til 2 hours later my dad called me saying she passed away. In less than 12 hours she went from healthy to dead. She was only 4 years old.

Sorry to hear. Thoughts are with you and her. I have been there before.

Very tough. I don't know where you live but I swear winter is harder on the older animals, making them tire out quicker.

Man it’s tough when you lose one. I worry our shitzu mix will do this. She is almost 14 but plays like she is a puppy. It is going to be tough when it happens. I am like the op … when her time come she will go here at home in her bed with her stuff beside her

Sorry to hear that man. We lost our sweet girl Lady on Nov. 4. She was older and had a bad heart. It took about 10 days and we started fostering a chubby mutt named Sadie. Get a shelter or rescue dog, there are some great dogs looking for a good home.

Sorry to hear about your dog's health. As others mentioned it completely sucks. I can never get used to it so I know how you feel. I hope things improve for her if at all possible. There might be hope because of the test results.

Make sure she is getting water and food, even if just a little. I know their appetites can wane when ill but it is important otherwise it can snowball into something worse. There's glucosamine chondroitin supplements for dogs also. Maybe she has arthritis and find it painful to walk? Or is it a heart issue?

That’s a little odd.

While a dogs demise is quicker than a humans generally, even a dog full of tumors and cancer will go down gradually. You’ll see lethargy, lack of appetite etc escalate until they just won’t get up to eat or go to the bathroom.

The sudden change is abnormal.

Sudden salivation can indicate poisoning or ingestion if something else that isn’t agreeing.

Loose stool or vomiting?
