Eh. It’s a torn acl/meniscus. You’re not dying. I hate to be the guy to minimize things but I’d take this injury over most other outcomes from a hard fall on a motorcycle. Depending on your age, activity level, etc, you might do ok without surgery. Or could delay the surgery for several months. Either way, I wouldn’t operate on you until your swelling was down to normal and you had full knee range of motion. I’d slap on a hinged knee brace and go to work getting your range back and seeing if you can get back to work with a brace on. Then plan the surgery when you can take the time off.

It's a temporary set back for you. Great therapy to get in an hear your ride start up, that was the first thing I did. I'm living out my bonus round as of two years ago. Doctors would ask about my mental state coming so close to death. I couldn't grasp to question or relate to the concern. Every day was a slow step forward and a internal competition to over achieve. It's a state of mind. Look at this as just a blip on your life's trun of events. There's always something else you can do for excitement. I believe one should experience life running Balls to the Wall. Like this winner of the tractor pulls last night. He's in his 70's and showed no sign of any shits given as he almost hit the wall at the end of the track. Set backs will force you to savor life and the good times, or break you. GOD SPEED on your recovery. Here's something for your viewing pleasure.

I got to go on a car ride today! I wanted to go see my GT500. She hasn’t been started or even seen by me in weeks. Felt so good to hear the cold start on her. Seeing the car gives me motivation!

Dan if you need one of those braces I may have one. I know I have a few good knee braces but will check if I still have a hinged brace if you need it. Can’t recall if you have insurance coverage on this but if not the brace is yours.

Hey James! Thanks for that, I do have insurance. I’ve been told by multiple people to get the hinged brace. I don’t currently have one. I did reach out to @kirks5oh and he’s been giving me some advice and such on my situation. Thank you to everyone.

Anytime man, moved offices and a PT gym and found several braces.
You’ll get back. Hell maybe even to work in a hinged brace but I know there are lots of variables there. Stay strong bro.

If I don’t get any sort of brace when I go tomorrow I’ll reach out to you about that hinge brace if you don’t mind! Thanks for the kind words man. Life is full of obstacles. This is just one more for me.

Hey man -- I just found this thread and wanted to wish you luck and hope you have a rapid recovery. I'm still laid out from breaking my leg last month and have more time on the sofa than I'd like to admit. Sending you a PM......

So I hate a shit update in hindsight, however I’ll share todays events.

He kept eluding the surgery. He’s like well you fall in that grey area. He asked how active I was compared to a D1 athlete or a desk job. I said I’m rather active and do constant up and down motions on my knees for working on cars, detailing them, driving them and of course my job. He’s like let’s get you to do stretches and get to weight bearing. I said can I walk with a torn ACL, he said yes but it could give out at any time and you’d need emergency surgery. I’m like dude what the ****. Do I get the surgery or not. He said yeah I would at your age and activity level. Jesus Christ. Then he says I can’t do it until 9/18. I’m recovering from shoulder surgery. I said should I be waiting or?.. He said oh well you can wait, but you’d prolong the need for surgery. I said okay who did yours? He said doctor Lamar. I’ll call him and have the referral sent if you’d like. I said well if you say he did yours and you’d do the surgery I’ll think about it. He says I’ll see you in 10 days. I was like okay, not even thinking. Then I got up front and the **** starts arguing with me. Well if you’re seeing another doctor for surgery you should go to them for check ups. I’m not trying to push you away, just saying you’re under a 90 day umbrella after surgery. I said I’m gonna go now, she was like we don’t make referrals and work for Lamar you’ll have to call. I said bitch he just said he would call him personally and get me in by next week for my surgery. So in a nutshell I have to see a separate surgeon next Tuesday. Once she has my photos, results etc they will put me in for an emergency surgery.

Doctors are a riot. Now, love my heart doctor, but my stress test that was supposed to be December ending up getting moved to April due to some building issues from that hurricane. That starts a new round of deductible. I had hit mine as most of you last October to the tune of about $500K.

Doctors are humans just like everyone else. Some are better than others. Med school doesn’t teach social skills. Acl surgery is never emergency surgery. You’re good to go, for a bit, with a hinged knee brace. Get the swelling down, get your range of motion good, and then get the surgery within the next two months and you’ll be fine.

If you’re 31, healthy, and active—there’s no grey area. Especially with the meniscus tear. You need to see a sports orthopedic specialist. Either one of my sports partners would have locked you down for a surgical date, given you a brace in the office, and started physical therapy immediately.

Except for extremely rare circumstances, the guy who does the surgery, manages the rehab and recovery (three months after the surgery). Aka—don’t get the surgery by dr A, and see dr B for follow up.

PT is important to keep or develop the supporting muscle structure to the injuries as a bridge to recovery. So either keeping it or developing, depending on the time from injury to surgery.

Prior to hip replacements, they ask they patient to lose weight and maintain or build the muscle around the hip to aid in recovery, some by way of PT, same sort of theory.

Good luck with whatever happens, keep us posted.
