How the **** do I get out of jury duty?

Got summoned back in October. Deferred it until next week and forgot all about it until I received the jury summons in the mail yesterday. Can not defer it again in Florida.

I understand the process and need for jurors but I forgot about it and failed to mark it in my calendar.

I’m on standby status so I have to call the night before for a week to see if I have to actually go into the court. Might not even have to go in but if I do I ****ed myself and a lot of other good people and friends:( It’s all on me.

I talked to a friend who’s a retired lawyer and he said the best course of action is to just listen to the questions carefully…if I have any biases, hardships, a lack of impartiality, or old fashioned emergencies that prevent me from continuing after that first day…speak up, and state my case.
Others have come up with other stupid ideas like dressing a certain way etc.

I know this is on me and I did this to myself and I understand the need for jurors of your peers etc but I made an honest mistake.

Wife has been summoned for jury duty twice. She didn't have to serve either time. Just had the once a month standby waiting on a phone call.

There is no getting out in our county in TN. They defer you and you serve one way or another.

I've always wanted to be called for JD, has never happened. Been waiting 30 years. LOL

My late FIL was on a murder trial, was sequestered for a week and out of town and everything. National Guard was called out and everything. This was 40-50 years ago.

Do you have travel plans?

I've been summoned 3 times, twice in college and once as an adult. In college they relieved me of having to report because I was out of town and as an adult they relieved me because I has airline tickets

I'll echo what your attorney friend said.

Last time I was summoned was about four years ago in Vegas. More than half of the people who showed were told they could leave. I was selected to remain and we headed up to the courtroom. The judge and lawyers for each side as well as the accused were all there. The accused had been arrested for armed robbery. He had accosted a woman coming out from a store and dragged her at gunpoint to the side of the establishment and took her belongings.

The judge individually asked us a few questions. Marital status, do we have children, our job, our highest level of completed education, and if we had ever been a victim of a crime. I think what might have made the lawyers not select me was the fact that I had been a victim of a few different crimes. Two of which were never resolved.

Perhaps they thought I had some resentment for that(which I do) and would probably just assume the accused was guilty and would want him imprisoned regardless of whatever happened during the trial.

So anyway, if you end up in the same situation I did, try stressing the fact you've been a crime victim in the past. It might work.

That idea to a point was suggested by a friend.

If I’m called in and instructions are given just do nothing and sit there.
I got out of it forever with a nice doctor exemption. As the doc basically said if I hit the floor and the medics come expect a nice fat hospital ER bill. That was 10 years ago. As I was called up 4 times before that and not a word as they didn't utilize me. I had to basically put my life on hold for a month while waiting for a call up and nothing but crickets. I did tell them do another and I will get out of it and so I did with the 5th one.

Are you 100% sure that you received a summons? Could it be proven…because you signed for it?

Mail gets lost around me all the time. I bet I’ve had a jury summons lost in the mail at least once.

What is concerning to me is that smart and influential potential jurists find a way to get out leaving it to less qualified.

If I was innocent I don’t want to be judged by a bunch or morons or Karen’s that don’t have anything better to do.

If I am guilty I probably want a dumb ass jury. That is when we need smart people with a spine to not let these folks walk.

It’s not like this is going to cause you a financial hardship or a work conflict since you are retired.

I am sure I will get flamed for this POV.

Unfortunately no travel plans that require airlines.
Wear your MAGA hat and a shirt with a Gadsden flag on it. You will be home before lunch.
I was also suggested this but my friend said they’ll just make me remove my hat and turn my shirt inside out.
I guess I could fight them on that.
Take a Bible with you...you won't last 5 mins and will be DISMISSED!
I like it.

1) Be accountable. Go. You admittedly ****ed up, too bad.
2) It’s your duty as a citizen to serve.
3) Ask yourself If you were wrongly accused of a crime, what kind of jurors do you want?

Yeah, you can believe that if you want to.

My wife was taking care of her Senior citizen mom who was wheel chair bound. She missed jury duty and had to go to court. When she explained her situation, the judge told her that was no excuse to miss jury duty and fined my wife. So, yes something happens if you decide to just blow it off.

There are ways to get out of it. I was living in TX, but working in NM. I submitted a letter saying so. After my situation was verified I was removed from the TX jury selection list.

Link your posts from SVTP to your jury questionnaire. If you know the case type let them know you positions and biases. You could also say you cannot be fair or impartial because a case like this impacted you personally or to your family before.

I used to get notices. At one point my number was pulled, showed up, but the trail was dismissed. I was told by a friend here that he just throws them away because they don't come registered and need to be signed for. Not sure how that would go over.

Others have also told me to do nothing. Just not show up. This is Collier county. A land of law and order and there’s no way I’m doing that. I can just see me going to renew my drivers license and getting ****ed at the least.
