I'm fairly certain I threw in 10w20, though might have been 5w30 (don't honestly remember). I believe it was pep boys.

I used Mobil 1 5W-30, I couldn't bring myself to put a 20 range in considering our weather here & the fact that it's a blown engine - & knowing the factory range is about EPA compliance & not engine protection. I get mine at KMart for $1 less a quart than Pep Boys or WalMart. Filter is factory motorcraft from Ford dealer though.

It probably was the 5w-30 but could have been 0w-30. Mobil One comes in 0w-30, 5w-30, 10w-30 and 15w-50. that's what for sale in my area of the Notheast. I am finally able to buy the large 5 quart containers of 5w-30 Mobil One that Walmart is selling for $18.88.
thanks Walmart.

Mobil 1 does come in a 0W-20 weight oil. It says right on the container that it is approved for Ford and Honda vehicles which call for 5W-20.

I have seen the 0w-30 (that is what I use) and a 0w-40. The 0w-40 says it is for BMW and Mercedes. So if I get the 03, I should just stick with the Mobil 1 0w-30 like I use now for the 01 cobra?

JC,
I use 15w50 in my 00R and 95R for track duty because of the extreme temperatures they run at. I think it would be overkill for a street car.

Thats pretty interesting because I went to the Mobil One website and they list only 5 viscosity grades of Mobil One oil. 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30, 10w-30 and 15w-50. Did you see this 0w-20 oil in a Mobil One container in the store.

I think the first number is the cold flowing ability with the lower numbers flowing more freely when cold. The second number is the hot flowing number with lower numbers flowing more freely when hot. I am not however an oil expert.

I do really like synthetic from ten years of using Mobil One. That's a long enough test for me. My 92,000 mile 11 year old LX ran better than new.

I think it is a bad idea - one of the most important things in proper lubrication is pumpability, and the speed at which the oil moves through the engine. That factors into proper cooling, proper oil pressure, etc. Too much vis can actually be harmful, esp at startup in colder climates.

That is the beauty of a first rate synoil like Amsoil or Red Line. They are intrinsically more resistant to breakdown, wear, and by nature of their polar affinity to metal, always leave a protective film behind, even at startup. They also have far superior additives, and much higher TBN (total base number, an indicator of how resistant they are to the formation of acids). These performances advantages can be realized in lower vis oils such as 0w30 or 5w30 or 10w30, which will ensure proper oil flow and pressure, without any concerns of oil fiml breakdown, even at the highest temps.

If you engine fails, and an oil analysis is performed, a thick oil will be a smoking gun, and then you have a debate on your hands about not using the proper vis. With a 30 weight syn, it is so close to the 5w20 that they would never know, since oils thicken (esp the dino oil SVT seems to love) in use after a few hundred miles, as the lighter factions in the oil burn off.

So the short answer is, I do not see any benefit, and some pitfalls. Thick oils will be history in a few years - even now, there is research at the top oil labs on developing super lubes that at 15w will perform great - that is the future - execpt in rare cases, 50w is the past.

Yes it was in quart Mobil 1 containers. Sells for $4.79 a qt. I did notice that this auto parts store is a real thoroughly stocked store with many, many choices in oil, filters, other fluids etc. Unlike the usual autozone, pep boys, checkers, etc.

They might know from the color.
