Got pulled over for tint today and the trooper said if I get another tint ticket that they will suspend my registration. Pretty sure they can't do that for something as little as tint.

I live in Iowa BTW.

Makes sense tint tickets are usually fix it tickets, you have a certain amount of time to show you remedied the issue. If you get a second ticket after that it shows you haven't remedied what makes your car not street legal, so no registration. I bet it would be the same for cats, tail light tint, etc anything that makes it technically not street legal.

Perhaps they can suspend the registration. I have no problem with that type of enforcement, especially since the violation is 100% preventable...

It's the same here in Cali... It's the law follow it or figure out how to get around it. My windows are tinted 5% on my truck and I think 15 or 20% on my mustang.

it's time to move somewhere else or get rid of the tint all together. sounds like you're in a place where there's not much maneuvering room or leeway with LEO's.

are you doing anything else when you get pulled over for tint? i.e. speeding, driving like a maniac or being aggressive and attracting attention?

or are you getting pulled over just for tint itself? and nothing else?

Here is what I found from a quick Google search:

321.101 SUSPENSION OR REVOCATION OF REGISTRATION OR
CANCELLATION OF CERTIFICATE OF TITLE BY DEPARTMENT.

1. The department is hereby authorized to suspend or revoke the
registration of a vehicle, registration card, registration plate, or
any nonresident or other permit in any of the following events:

a. When the department is satisfied that such registration
card, plate, or permit was fraudulently or erroneously issued.
b. When the department determines that a registered vehicle
is mechanically unfit or unsafe to be operated or moved upon the
highways.

c. When a registered vehicle has been dismantled or wrecked.

d. When the department determines that the required annual
registration fee has not been paid and the fee is not paid upon
reasonable notice and demand.
e. When a registration card, registration plate, or permit is
knowingly displayed upon a vehicle other than the one for which
issued.
f. When the department determines that the owner has
committed any offense under this chapter involving the registration
card, plate, or permit to be suspended or revoked.
g. When the department is so authorized under any other
provision of law.
h. If a commercial motor vehicle has been assigned to be
operated by a commercial motor carrier whose ability to operate has
been terminated or denied by a federal agency.
2. The department shall cancel a certificate of title that
appears to have been improperly issued or fraudulently obtained or,
in the case of a mobile home or manufactured home, if taxes were
owing under chapter 435 at the time the certificate was issued and
have not been paid. However, before the certificate to a mobile home
or manufactured home for which taxes were owing can be canceled,
notice and opportunity to pay the taxes must be given to the person
to whom the certificate was issued. Upon cancellation of a
certificate of title, the department shall notify the county
treasurer who issued it, who shall enter the cancellation upon the
records. The department shall also notify the person to whom the
certificate of title was issued, as well as each lienholder who has a
perfected lien, of the cancellation and shall demand the surrender of
the certificate of title, but the cancellation shall not affect the
validity of any perfected lien.
3. Notice of suspension or revocation of the registration of a
vehicle, registration card, registration plate, or any nonresident or
other permit under the terms of this section shall be by personal
delivery of the notice to the person to be so notified or by
certified mail addressed to the person at the person's address as
shown on the registration record. A return acknowledgment is not
necessary to prove such latter service.
4. If a vehicle, for which the registration has been suspended or
revoked pursuant to subsection 1, paragraph "d", or section
321.101A, is transferred to a bona fide purchaser for value without
actual knowledge of such suspension or revocation, then the vehicle
shall be deemed to be registered and the provisions of sections
321.28 and 321.30, subsection 1, paragraphs "d" and "e",
shall not be applicable to such vehicle for the failure of the
previous owner to pay the required fees.
Section History: Early Form

[C24, 27, 31, 35, § 5090; C39, § 5007.05; C46, 50, 54, 58, 62,
66, 71, 73, 75, 77, 79, 81, § 321.101; 82 Acts, ch 1251, § 14]
Section History: Recent Form

95 Acts, ch 55, §5; 99 Acts, ch 188, §12; 2000 Acts, ch 1016, §12;
2001 Acts, ch 153, §17; 2004 Acts, ch 1013, §19, 35; 2007 Acts, ch
126, §55; 2008 Acts, ch 1113, §84
Referred to in § 321.30

That being brought up, if the tint is illegal, and you have more than one violation for the same offense, it seems that the department issuing the registrations has the authority to deem it unsafe to operate, and CAN suspend your registration.

I am not sure how that process would work in your state, but the info is there.

Let's try this again. Are your eyes or skin very light sensitive? http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/225783-Doctor-s-note-for-tint

Medical waivers are no longer valid in Iowa.

Other Iowa window tint rules and regulations:
Iowa does have several other important laws, rules and regulations pertaining to window tinting. They include the following:

Side Mirrors: No restrictions on side mirrors in Iowa.
Restricted Colors: No colors of tint are explicitly prohibited from use.
Certificates: Manufacturers of film are not required to certify the film they sell in the state.
Stickers: No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.
Medical Exceptions: Iowa doesn't permit darker window tinting due to medical exemptions since July 2012.

Are you kidding? What did you get a ticket for? Pumping your own fuel?

LOL no. I had stopped in a very small town (pop. 3000 or so) to get fuel. I was standing there pumping fuel when a cop pulled in behind me and lit me up. He wrote me a ticket for no front license plate. Guess small town Barney Fife was bored that day.

Never went back to that town.

Most local town cops dont mind tint. It was a state trooper that pulled me over. He was hiding back in a dealership. I just drove past him, only pulled me over for tint.

It seems to me that OP has been told "your windows are illegal , fix them", and if he doesn't, his tag will be talken. If it were me, I would just fix the damn Windows and quit with the hurt ass. Talk about a loosing hand!

Yes the cop basically told me to fix them or my tags will be taken. I was just wondering of they can do that or if he was just trying to scare me. Never heard of a registration being suspended for something as minor as tint before is all.
