So i was reading in the new mm&ff and the project dsg terminator gained a little over 8 tenths off of its time by switching to 3.73's. This sounds tempting. So will it be worth it? What are some of the pro's and con's for our cars with 3.73s???

Chime in guys

CON---sitting at 80mph with higher rpms. that's one thing i really like about my GTO. at 80mph, i'm at 2000rpms. at 70mph, i'm at 1750rpms---its awesome

in the cobra, 80mph puts me at 2250 rpms---its a very noticeable difference, trust me

CON---with street tires, WOT in 1st will be absolutely pointless, maybe even 2nd, due to massive un-controlable wheelspin

I just read the article and the 8 tenths was not just from the gear swap.

They even said that they had 33 more hp and a new clutch for that run.

I also read that 33 more hp, But they said the gear swap was well worth it. Come on, 33 more rwhp isnt gonna get you but maybe a tenth or two. So that leaves the 3.73's with still a 6 or 7 tenth advantage. Clutch might be the factor though!

I will be putting in 3.73's when I install the urethane bushings, perfect gear for any car making around 500 rwhp.

Check driveline section

I'm thinking about 3.73's also. Posted a thread in the driveline section and got some interesting comments. Most suggest 3.90's

I got 3.73 gears with my solid swap and I am super happy.

Acceleration is a tick better for jumping off the line and on the freeway but I'll reserve my final judgement on keeping them when I get an auto and try to gear it so I go through the traps at a proper RPM in the correct gear. Overall I would not expect much gain from gears alone in 1/4 times especially coming from 3.55

If I were lower on horsepower I would definitely look into 3.73 gears, currently my trap speed will be higher then I can run 4th gear out reasonably and that is a big problem having to shift into 5th gear.

FWIW Here is my car accelerating on the freeway. Overall it just feels more responsive but not really that much faster. Mind even with 315 Nittos I still get the tires to spin a bit from a 3rd gear punch easier so it would look a tick faster with warm drag radials. I started just behind his rear bumper and had that dang fuel hesistation going into 4th.

Running 3.73's with 28" slicks at the track is a pretty commong setup for those folks that are trying to really maximize their setups. Perhaps not quite as functional a mod for street use, but strip use is another thing.

^^Thats a sick vid man. Looks like that thing hauls. As far as the 3.73's go, it's not much of a difference, although traction would definitely be a little more of an issue unless you were always driving on drag radials. First gear is useless past 50% throttle and I can't floor it in 2nd either, and this is on Nitto street tires w/ less than 2,000 miles on them.

500hp maybe....... But who's happy with 500hp???

How much power are you making now?

As far as the 3.73, it's a popular track mod but I'd think about it a bit more if you're intending to use it primarily on the street. For one thing you're going to have traction issues on the street without a good sticky tire (more intended for the track). Also, although gas prices are down now, sooner or later they'll start to climb again and if this is your daily driver gas mileage will be a consideration. You're going to use more gas with a 3.73 vs. the stock 3.55. JMO.
