I’m not surprised. He had a checkered past dealing with some hard drugs and other issues.
I didn't follow him a lot, but from everything I read, he seemed to be kind of an asshole. I just don't know a lot about depression. I can't imagine what it does to you.
Well time to ban bed sheets, shoe strings, rope and anything else that can easily be wrapped around a neck. As if it can prevent one less life taken it would be well worth it.

Stable isn't something I would associate with him, he was drunk or getting drunk on a lot of his episodes. Depression is no joke but alcohol is not the solution for it.

Suicide is the most selfish thing a human being can do. If they didn't respect their life enough to not end it, why should I?
possibilities for suicide (no particular order):
1 - you're sad (oversimplification to include depression, anxiety, etc)
2 - you don't want to go to jail (or be there longer)
3 - self euthanasia for some terrible illness
4 - some bushido style "death before dishonor" type thing
Only one of those will allow you to keep respect from me, and maybe (big maybe, small number of possibilities) certain instances of #2 and 4.
Other than that, you're hanging body is now a piñata full of jokes that we should all feel free to take swings at
