I’m getting ready to upgrade to a True-Trac diff. with a gear change & would like to get an idea on what type of Highway Speeds / RPM’s to expect with a 28” tall Drag Radial.

i run 4.10s but dont have drag radials yet. should be on drag radials next month.

Are you going to be running at the track? Because you will be shifting into 5th and killing your times.

I see your running 3.73's with a Boss Intake... What gear are you trapping in 4th? What kind of RPM are you seeing at the end of the 1/4?

yes i will be taking it to the track. i know that i will be shifting to 5th but it dosnt matter. im not looking to set records. i figure that it i can get a decent 60 foot time i should get a good number with my power.

Ive trapped 122mph as my highest in 4th gear at around 7250 RPM's. Ive thought about going up to a 3.90 gear but dont know what it would help/hurt.

Nothing about records, just alot of money for the blower and so little money to swap gears and get all you can out of it :beer:

the thing is that even with 3.31 you might still need to shift to 5th. i dont want to spind the motor much over 7200 with the stock bottom end and a blower.

With a 28 inch tire, 3.31's shifting at 7200 RPM's you should be able to trap around 138mph in 4th gear.

What kind of highway speeds / rpm's are you guys seeing cruising down the road in 6th gear?

WBT runs or ran 4.30's, but i think he is auto. However, iirc he went 11.0 w/4.30's NA.

WBT runs 3.31's and is deep into the 10's. Kdanner ran with 4.30's at one time but switched out to 3.31's and found they worked better for him.

OP,

It seems the numerically higher the gear ratio the less mpg you will get. I have 3.73 and 285/35/19 tires. Anything above 65 mph on the highway and my mpg falls. So if I can stay under 2,000 rpm I get good mileage. Do 75 and the mpg falls. My buddy with his 3.31 gearing is able to get better mileage at the same highway speeds. Less RPM as well as cam timing for better fuel mileage I bet.

The first gear in the MT82 is 3.66 to 1. That with a 3.73 you have plenty of gearing for drag racing on a 28" tall tire. And you can finish the 1/4 t in 4th gear which is 1.32 to 1.

A 3.31 and 26" tall tire is another option as well.

It seems most people have seen ET suffer when they shift into 5th gear in the 1/4 mile.

I'm not so concerned with the MPG dropping off some, just want to still be able to cruise at 65 to 70 on the highway in 6th gear & keep the car in 4th through the 1/4.

I'm thinking the 3.90's will be a much gear as I want to go & keep the car streetable. With the Boss intake I should be ok with the RPM's... time to talk with the tuner & get there thoughts.

Yeah, if you have a Boss intake and tune you will be set with a 3.90 gear as far as the 1/4 goes.

If you have a true 28" tall tire you will be around 2,000 rpm at 65mph, 2,200 at 70mph and 2,400 at 78 mph. In 6th gear of course.

In 4th gear you will be about 118 at 7,300 rpm and 121mph at 7,500 rpm and 126mph.

No problem. This website has some nice tools for figuring out gearing, Air Density, horse power based on car weight and ET/MPH and more. Handy for sure. They also have a app you can download on your phone as well. :beer:
