Are automatics quicker then 6spd manual? I know most of the 8-9 second cars have automatics. But then why do most sports car come in manual. Has it been done and common with 8-9 second 1/4 times in a 6spd?

I had to vote yes. But only because the combination of clutch, 6 speed with poor shifting from 2-3-4, and weak half shafts causing wheel hop make it hard to get the perfect combination of slip and traction to avoid wheel hop and get the perfect "leave". :burnout:

I'd say it depends on the car. In a fast race car yes they are quicker but it something stock. Say a Mach1 for instance an auto is slower. Driver of a 6-speed has a lot to do with it.

Depends on car...

Race an auto escort vs. a manual escort. The manual escort will RAPE the auto....

I agree completely. I think that automatics are the way to go for serious bracket racing, because you just cannot beat their consistency. There's simply less room for error. A greater part of the human factor is removed with automatics. However, for street driving, I happen to enjoy manual transmissions better since you have more control of the shift points, and you can keep the RPM's where you want them (unlike with automatics).

I also think that manual transmissions are more durable for higher HP applications, although many factory stock clutches don't hold-up very long to abuse.

When you have most street cars, the manual will drain less power than the auto giving it a slight edge when shifted well. However, when a car is making 1200rwhp and going through the 1/4 mile in 8 seconds, you simply just don't hav enough time to monitor the RPM's and shift accordingly while keeping control of your car. Most of the really fast cars are crazily built 2-speed auto. Low gear and high gear.

Yup, look at the dragsters, the fastest cars out there and they row gears! But i have not seen an auto miss 3rd, unless she blows up! Another one for conisistency and the right torque converter can make for a hard hitting auto.

+1

Have any of you guys seen the one video with the auto turbo'd mach against a 500+ cobra...the mach killed the cobra once he had to shift.

But stock for stock a manuel is faster and a lot funner to drive :burnout:

most deff, for the drag strip anyway
but i would take a stick in autocross or road course and on the street for the fun factor. but they do suck in heavy traffic

Manual. With an auto, more of the power goes to the transmission, rather than to the wheels. And yes, the driver makes all the difference, but with a good driver, the stick wins all else equal (reaction times, hp, track prep, etc..)

It all depends on the gearing, I know most companies make the drive ratios for manuals and autos much different.

Too bad Ford doesn't offer a six/seven-speed auto tranny. That'd be kinda neat.

I also think the "fun" factor is really dependant on the driver. I've heard that an auto with the rights mods can peg the "fun" meter pretty hard...
