REBOOT!

Paramount has confirmed the long in the works deal to cofinance and distribute the reboot of James Cameron’s Terminator franchise creation. Highbrow picture maker Megan Ellison spent over $20 million for the rights in 2011, and the project didn’t go very far. Things finally started percolating when Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures joined forces with brother David Ellison, whose Skydance Productions has a deal with Paramount and makes popcorn movies. Avatar’s Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier have been working on the script for months. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the title character and the hope is to get at least two movies done before North American copyright reverts back to Cameron, who might want a fortune or might want to retire the franchise. Here’s the announcement:

Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures have jointly announced they will partner on a rebooted “TERMINATOR” movie, to be released by Paramount Pictures on June 26, 2015.

The first in a stand-alone trilogy, “TERMINATOR” will be produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna and David Ellison of Skydance. Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake of Skydance will serve as executive producers. Laeta Kalorgridis (“Avatar,” “Shutter Island”) and Patrick Lussier (“Drive Angry”) are attached to write the screenplay.

Launched in 1984 with star Arnold Schwarzenegger as the title character, “TERMINATOR” spanned 3 subsequent films, which have earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

David Ellison most recently executive produced, along with his partners at Paramount, “World War Z,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”. A 5th installment of in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is in active development, along with a 3rd film in the “G.I. Joe” franchise, among other films.

Megan Ellison most recently produced the Academy Award®-nominated “Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Master” and executive produced “Spring Breakers” via her Annapurna Pictures banner and has David O. Russell’s “American Hustle,” Spike Jonze’s “Her,” and Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher” set for release later this year.

I guess technically he did say he WILL BE BACK.

Awesome , but he's so old these days . The last terminator Arnold was in just didnt have the Arnold he was in part 2. I think they can make something great still and they do need to finalize the story .

I'm a fan of the series, but damn Arnold. Give it a rest. He looks nothing like he did 20+ years ago in T2.

I'm willing to bet it's just him in human form and then a CGI version of him 20 years ago as the aggressor.

At first I was like

then I read...

"...and the hope is to get at least two movies done before North American copyright reverts back to Cameron, who might want a fortune or might want to retire franchise..."

I hope that this doesn't mean they just are going to crank out 2 movies as fast as they can :(

Yes Salvation was good.

If they try to cast present day Arnold as the main terminator things will not turn out well for this movie.

How about they cast an '03-'04 Cobra as the Terminator? Now that's thinking outside the box.

I guess I am one of those fans who cant wait to see Arnold in another terminator movie. Yeah he is old, but they will make him look badass I bet.

You cant have a terminator movie without arnold. Old arnold or young arnold, doesnt matter. If arnold is in the movie, then it will be worth to watch.

After reading that first paragraph outlining the people/production companies involved in this reboot... I don't have a lot of confidence we'll get anything even remotely worthwhile.

Unfortunately, it sounds like that, and that would likely translate into lackluster movies overall. Hollywood can't seem to produce many awesome original movies so they milk the sequel thing. Heck, they are saying "at least" two movies. Sounds like they'll do more than two if they can do it. I don't have high hopes that these new Terminator movies will be anywhere near the quality of the first one or two. Besides, Arnold IMO is too old to play the part. An elderly Terminator? :dw:

Why not continue after Salvation? I liked the movie was no T1 or T2 but it also wasn't a T3. I wanted to see the origins of T1000. This reboot is going to blow, seems like they are going for Arnold to spark people's interest. I hope Cameron retires Terminator for good, his movies were golden!

The old veteren Terminator [ Arnold ] breaks in the new rookie Terminator [ Channing Tatum] to help mankind finish off the machines.
Or same scenario but set in the future were the machines send a pair of Terminators
to try and reboot Skynet because they buried the secret reboot computer in some mountain [ or on Mars, why not?]
And Arnie and Chan have to stop them.
Bad Guy terminators could be Rainn Wilson and Jaleel White[ he needs the work]

Sadly, I do not think this will end well. Just leave it alone. It will never come close to T2.

Another way to make it work is say that the terminator that Arnold is playing has been activated for 30-years (perhaps silently protecting Connor without his knowledge). There's nothing that says a terminator can't be programed to age over time in order to better blend in.
