We usually go to obx but want to see something different. Seems like up north might have some nice destinations. Girl has been looking at cape cod? Anyone go there? And what are other options. Must be by the beach for her and kids and I would like a place with a lot of history to explore. Keep in mind it will be early sept. so I guess water will be pretty cold? How is the air temp up there at that time?

The weather in early September is usually still nice for the beach. You should be fine, though unless unusually cool weather sneaks in. We haven't been to the Cape is years but it definitely is a good beach area. And Boston isn't too far away (75 miles) if you wanted to drive there for the day. Be sure and do a whale-watch cruise while you're there.

There is really plenty to do in and around Cape Cod. This will get you started. Google 'Cape Cod Attractions', 'Cape Cod Things To Do' for more.

Thanks. I actually forgot to mention about Boston. Definitely would like to go for a day if not stay a night. My girl lived there briefly going to school and said it was one of her favorite places out of everywhere she lived. I was only there once but would like to go back.

Newburyport, MA has a nice beach out on PLum Island, and might remind you of some beaches in the OBX or the Cape. There's a wild life refuge out there, so there should be plenty of scenery.

Plus, it's close enough to Boston for a day trip back and forth.

Cape cod is great! Really cool area with beautiful beaches, plenty of history and great seafood. Also check out marthas vineyard and nantucket. Both great places but the best bang for your buck is the Cape with a day trip via the ferry to the vineyard. I live about an 45-50 mins north of the cape and spend a good portion of my summer afternoons there. Kids should have fun too. It's enjoyable for all ages. I know I sound like a travel salesman but it really is a beautiful place that time of the year

We have a home on the Cape. Its in West Yarmouth about 1/4 mile to the beach. September is one of the best times to visit, right after Labor day. I would definately recommend a day trip to Nantucket and to take a drive to P-Town ( just be ready to see some strange stuff ) and go on a whale watch. You can also go to Chatham, you may see some great whites! Plenty to do on the Cape. If you're interested you could probably stay at our place.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. Forgot to mention my stepmom grew up on Martha's vineyard. We use to go there in the summer when I was a kid but that's the last time I was there. Her mom actually got picked to play a role in the original jaws as they filmed there. She still gets royalty checks even though her mom passes many years ago, kind of crazy. Anyway thinking would like to stay in cape cod somewhere, with day trips to the vineyard, maybe Nantucket if you guys think it's worth seeing both, and to Boston. Would staying in cape be the best as far as a central location to do all the day trips or would there be a better option?

I go to school in Boston and love it. So much to do there, but I never went to the water.

My ex GF lives 5 minutes from Newburyport. Beautiful area, and I've been to plum island and it's a nice area. If your up there visit Crane's Castle, it's unbelievable.

GF's parents have a house on the water near cape cod. Beautiful area. Cape Cod itself is nice obviously, but is more touristy. There are just as nice areas before the bridge.

Nantucket is nice, but wayyyyyy to rich. We rent a house there on memorial day with a large group of friends to offset the cost. Very nice area, lots of fun.

Can't say I've found a nice town in CT to visit yet. Milford has some OK spots, but not too familiar with that part of the state.

wife went to cape cod in July a few years back for the 4th, said the beaches were pretty but no waves and it was way too cold for the nights. We like warm weather and an active beach so that may not be your ticket, but we always go to OBX, I have gone I think 22 out of my 27 years here on earth, most the time for two weeks so I am biased to NC beaches

That time of year traffic shouldn't be too bad traveling to and from the Cape. During the summer it can get busy. Personally, I would find a place on the Cape and commute out for day trips. Staying in a cottage/hotel on the Cape is half the fun IMO. Maybe take FF500's offer to stay at his house there.

He also mentioned taking a trip to Provincetown and about being prepared for some weird stuff. That is a definite. Especially if you have young children. It is a popular gay area and unless things have changed, they express their gayness very openly. Just be aware for your kids.

Being a life long resident of New England beach areas, here are the ranks IMO:

1. Cape Cod & The Islands
2. Newport, RI
3. Old Orchard Beach, ME
4. Hampton Beach, NH
5. White Horse Beach, Plymouth, MA

While most of these are individual beach areas, Cape Cod is nothing but endless beach towns. I was born in Falmouth. One of my favorite beaches is Old Silver Beach. It's pretty much like swiming in tropical waters there... perfect white sand, clear, warm water, waves, etc. The only problem is it gets very crowded.

Venture down Cape a little further to towns like Yarmouth, Denis, Chatham, etc, and you'll find a lot of excellent beaches.

Also, check out the Coast Guard Beach....

But, BEWARE OF GREAT WHITE SHARKS!

Still is the gay headquarters of the East Coast Bob... The area of P-Town itself is very nice. But, beware that you will be in a very flamboyantly gay community over there...

I'm a life long Cape resident, and I've been there only once, and once was enough for me.

+1. I went there last summer for the first time since I have been 4 or 5. People aren't kidding when they say watch out for some weird stuff. It can be funny to some but if your kids are little I doubt you will find it too comical. The food there is great but half the dudes are dressed like chicks and the other half are rollerblading around town in leopard thongs holding hands. Needless to say it's not on my list of places to revisit in the near future
