So my daily driver right now is a 2007 Ford Ranger XL with a 4 banger in it. Since last week, when I try and start it, it tries to turn over but then I hear this loud metallic clank then it doesn't start. If I keep the key turned, it will continue to do this over and over until I stop trying to start it. Is the motor toast?

Do a compression test. They were notorious for blowing head gaskets and cracking the cylinder heads.

Put a socket on the crank pulley and turn the motor a little. Then try to start it again. If it starts now you either have a broken tooth on your flywheel/flexplate or there was a foreign object jamming on of the teeth.
