My opinon is "A" and yet if you ask the losing vehicle they would say "B" would be a car length. LOL

In a race, if your front bumper and your opponents front bumper are dead even the distance is "zero car lengths". If your opponents front bumper pulls away from you to were his rear bumper is at your front bumper the distance is "one car length". If your opponent continues to pull away from you and the distance between your front bumper and his/her's rear bumper is great enough that you can put a car between them then the distance is refered too as "two car lengths". If your opponent has more than two car lengths on you the term "car lenths" is changed to "bus lengths" at this moment it's time you quit the race because you've lost.

I guess i usually say, "One car length of open water"....so i guess that i am right then :shrug:

Sounds like you are describing a two car length lead. It would be best understood to use method (A) for the majority of car enthusiasts.
Technically your description of open water is correct but takes a few seconds to sink in.
