A lot of misinformation in this thread. It’s best to consult a professional in your area. Here in Vegas, you gotta have one unless you are already psychotic and just looking for a straw to break the camel’s back before you go postal. It is a must.
I test the water weekly, throw in a few chlorine tabs when needed, I invested the $1300 in an energy efficient filter/pump, and we have a floor system instead of a vacuum/robot. Once in a while my water will be “off” and I gotta throw some chems in to fix it, but rarely.
