I use Microfiber towels and tape them down so they do not move at all. Also wash the car before using them. And for a little extra protection, I don't ask for anyone's help when working on my car.

I have a couple foam liners I use. Picked them up at a car show. I went fancy and got the one that says Cobra on it.

I have a couple of old Snap on ones that I have had for decades, I am thinking I might spring for a couple of Ford ones from LMR one of these days

I’m poor, and my cars are trash so I just lean on the fenders with my Texas belt buckle.

Kidding aside I actually use masking tape, or if I’m feeling spunky there is a plastic almost film I had at one time.
