I finally got started on the install of my Griggs suspension. I am installing the complete SLA front suspension and Torque arm/Watt Link. The front suspension I purchased from someone who installed it but never drove the car. He had powder coated everything red but the powder coat wasn't the greatest so I decided to have it all stripped and redone. Anyone who knows me, or saw my Renegade car will know that I am a picky SOB. But I have to say, the powder coating is by far the best I have ever seen.

Look how smooth the powder coating is!!!!

***** A note on Central Mass Powder Coating ******

I ended up having some major issues with the powder coating and unfortunately have to rescind my recommendation of them. While it looks good at first it turns out that some things had to be re-done three times due to improper masking and a friends wheels peeled off in sheets. I'm currently looking for a more professional and higher quality shop if anyone has any recommendations.

By far the thing that took me the most time so far was finding a suitable place to support the engine while removing the cradle. I borrowed an engine support from a friend and set it on top of the strut towers and then began my search to find someplace to put the straps that I'd be using. Using an engine crane would be a little difficult due to the fact that the Griggs cradle is used to support the radiator as well. I have a couple of nylon ratchet straps that are good for supporting a continuous 600lbs each with a break strength of 1500lbs and I figured they would support the weight. I looked first at supporting by the headers, or wrapping under the motor somehow, but after staring at it for a long time I found a super easy solution. The hooks on the end of the straps hooked easily right into the motor mounts on each side. Unbolting the two engine mount bolts and about ten minutes setup and the engine was raised off of the mounts. It's certainly a wise idea to have a jack under the motor somewhere just in case a strap breaks when possible!

I spent some time mounting the Baer Extreem Pro+ brakes. Still waiting on some machined spacers that I need, and I did decide to disassemble the lower control arms and send them out to be powder coated. I will then have to send them back to Griggs so they can re-assemble them in a fixture that they have.

**** A note on Griggs *****

When I received the front suspension, I was missing more than half the bolts and spacers that are required for the install. Bruce spent at least an hour on the phone with me going over what I needed, packaged it all up and had it to me in two days. There are few companies around with this kind of customer service any more. I have used Griggs stuff in the past and was always satisfied. The fact that he would spend the time with me for a kit that I bought used is amazing. There are a couple companies out there trying to copy his stuff, but they can't come close to his knowledge and experience. Certainly worth the premium that his stuff commands.

Instructions suggest removing the entire front cradle with the struts still bolted to the spindles. It's only two extra bolts to remove the struts separately and in my opinion it makes it much easier. Needless to say, everything is removed except the cradle. Hopefully I'll get the cradle out tomorrow and get the new one in.

Starting to think about what I'm gonna do with the rear suspension. Should I have it powder coated black too? Hmmmm!!!!!!

I like attention to detail. I would do the rear black with some blue accents as well

I'm contemplating pulling the rear end out, and having it powder coated as well. The only think keeping me from it is that I want to have the rear wheels widened and go with 315s. I'm afraid that the tires will rub at the ride height that I end up at which will require me to narrow the axel a bit. I'd hate to powder coat it only to have to cut and weld it.

Wasn't able to get the cradle into the car this weekend due to lack of another hand to help lift it in. I spent Monday removing all the rear suspension and getting the rear end out of the car and ready for the upgrade. I shot some pics but can't load from my phone. I'll try to get them up in a day or so. Not expecting any progress before thursday.....

The components in black look amazing Michael. She's going to be one heck of a corner carver when you're done.

You're absolutely right about Bruce Griggs. Sometimes you have to be patient to get a hold of him but it is always worth it. His knowledge on chassis set up is second to none and I'm happy to say I've been onboard with Griggs Racing for four years now as their #1 US Distributor.

The photos?

Hi, Michael. Have you finished the Griggs install? How does it handle? Any pictures? Thank you.
