I was looking into moving my old lady back home while I go on work-ups and eventually a deployment. Move would be from Jacksonville to DFW area. I got a $1500 and $2100 quote from pods for their small and large containers.
The PODs small container is probably too small and the large is too large....so i was wondering if anyone has used any similar carriers. I really dont want to Uhaul stuff back (too much hassle and gas is $$). FYI the small container is 7x7x8 feet tall and the large is like 7x17x8 feet tall.

Any advice/experiences is greatly appreciated.

I used a large POD when I moved out of a duplex into a house I was having built. It was much more convenient for me to use a POD because the house wasn't finished when my lease was up. I didn't want to have to move everything into a storage unit for a couple of months, and move everything again into the house. POD's are a little more expensive, but they do offer convenience.

Also, try searching for POD's competitors. I did and was able to get a 10% discount when they matched someone else's price.

In-laws used one when they were moving and I helped load it up. It was very convenient because you walked right into it instead of up a ramp and had more room than a Uhaul does. I'd say they are worth it.

Yes.
Rented two 40 foot shipping containers. A friend was moving his shop and it was far cheaper to do it that way. Plus it kept the "moving losses" to zero.
Took three days to get them loaded with all the light stuff (the mills, lathe, and turning centers were moved by heavy equipment specialists) and the crane/flatbed picked them up and moved them to his new location
and dropped them off. A week later the containers were picked up.

It was effortless.

thanks for the replies guys, Its good to hear PODs seems to be pretty good for moving. I really dont want to drive 16 hours in a 15+ Foot Uhaul. No thanks
I will definitely see if PODS will price match their competitors

I was ****ed by PODS back in 06 when I had my house built.

The story goes like this. I was having a house built less than 10 miles from my current house that I was selling/moving from. I called PODS and gave them the address of both places (pick-up location of current house, and address of newly biult home). PODS came dropped off a POD, we filled it and they came back to pick it up to store it at their storage facilty. Now keep in mind I was paying a monthly storage fee with a set amount (less than $100, I can't remember exactly, it's been about 9 years) to have my PODS delivered to my new house. During the time my house was being built, PODS closed the storage facility and moved my belongings without my knowledge to a new storage facilty farther away, which in turn, moved my POD out of my "home area". This made the delivery charge close to $700, when it was supposed to be less than $100.

I went all the way to corporate level trying to get them to honor their contract and I think they ended up giving me a couple hundred off, when it wasn't even my fault. I still to this day get pissed off thinking about it. All I can say is if you use them, have them store the POD at your new house location if possible. **** PODS!!
