Hey SVTP,

I am working on a surprise trip to Vegas for my Dad's 60th birthday in December. I've been to Vegas before, and stayed at the Monte Carlo (Will never stay there again.)

We are looking to spend $500 a person, to stay from 12/2 - 12/5. The only hotel/flight packages I can find are looking like Treasure Island, Palms Place (off strip), or Excalibur. Has anyone here stayed at any of those, or have other recommendations? Would love to stay at the Bellagio or somewhere related, but it's a bit out of our price range. I realize we won't be in the hotel much, but hate to end up in a crap hotel at the same time.

Look into the Marriott Grand Chateau. I stay there when I go to Vegas. The rooms are MUCH nicer than at one of the casinos and it's right beside planet Hollywood on the strip.

I would only stay at the palms if you have a rental car.

Excalibur is a dump, and now one of the oldest hotels on the strip.

Treasure Island was remodeled about 5 years ago, and the food there isn't bad, plenty of options.
Also TI is within walking distance of the Venetian, the Wynn, mirage, Caesars, etc so there is plenty to see and do at that end of the strip.

Stay away from the Excalibur unless you like walking out of your room to a crime scene or a shemale hooker passed out in the hallway....Sometimes the Luxor has some nice deals but it looks like you will be there over the weekend and the prices go up at every hotel.

Of your choices I would pick TI.

We were just at MGM less than a month ago, that has been my wife and I's go to spot for the last 6 or 7 trips.

This. I only stay at the Cosmopolitan when I go.

If you cant stay at one of the City Center Hotels, (Cosmo, vdara, etc) TI is the best of what you proposed. Make sure you price, Venetian, and Palatzzo. Rooms are huge. I would recommend against anything off the strip. You really want to be on the strip to be able to walk to where you want to go.

Well, unfortunately the budget only allows for so much. I'm pretty sure I clarified that in my original post, so of course we can't stay at the Mandala Bay, Aria, Venetian. Point taken though, thanks for that. Guess I'll have to fork out a bit more than I wanted to. Was trying to save money on somewhere to stay but looks like that may not be the best idea.

Last time I went, we got a good deal at the Luxor, and it was just fine. Its off at the far end, but you can basically cross the street and take the tram to any other hotel you want on the strip for almost free.

I have stayed at those 3* hotels in the past, but now we only stay at Bellagio or Aria.
Check other sites for deals on Aria or Bellagio to see if you can make it work, and when you arrive sign up for an M-life card, and they will continuously send you offers for 3 nights free.

Also, where are you departing from for flights?
I will try to find you a deal on one of the better hotels.

Good advice if you plan on returning within a year, our Mlife got us 4 comped nights last month at MGM.

We will fly out of Chicago. We in Central IL, and hoping to fly nonstop, which Ohare seems to be the only case.

Best price for 12 PM departure on 12/2 and 11 AM departure on 12/5, nonstop flights at The Mirage (with King size bed) is $635 a person from what I can find.

I think we settled on The Mirage.

My favorite place to stay in Vegas is the Hard Rock, but I'm basing that off being able to use the pool. You're not going to be doing that in Dec. I stayed there for nearly a month a couple years back.

I'm not sure how much your dad will like the party boy crowd a Cosmo.

Prices are way too high on the weekend, what's the breakdown on flights/hotel?

Southwest should have a bunch of non stop flights to Vegas from Chicago.

As for the mirage, that's usually my go to place when I go to Vegas with the GF.
You'll like it there, and it's very centrally located.

Just priced it out with Expedia or bundle deals with Southwest. Southwest is about 30 cheaper total per couple, but we'd have to leave earlier in AM, so it kind of balances out.

Best I can find is roughly $635 a person w/ Expedia, flight and hotel included for Mirage..

Here's a better deal with room at Bellagio:
The departure has 1 stopover, but the return is nonstop.
