First off, you should never try to dig from anything other than solid ground, from what I can tell that is a bridge made out of plywood. Then he tried digging too far down and too far out, those little machines tell you not to do that because while they do weight quite a bit, a good portion of that is in the arm and they flip very easily. If he would've been patient enough to relocate, nothing would have happened.
