When will this nonsense end?

GAUHATI, India - A lawmaker said he sacrificed more than 200 goats and four buffaloes at a temple in northeastern India to thank a goddess for delivering victory to the prime minister's government last week.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Congress party survived the July 22 confidence vote after weeks of political uncertainty that nearly toppled the government.

The last-minute support of Kishor Samrite's Samajwadi party, a one-time opponent, was key to the victory.

And since Sunday, Samrite has been participating in rituals at the 16th-century Kamakhya temple in Gauhati, the capital of the northeastern state of Assam.

Animal sacrifices are traditional rituals at the hilltop temple, a famous Hindu pilgrimage destination.

The animal sacrifices have sparked controversy, however, as animal rights activists have held street demonstrations near the temple protesting Samrite's prayer ceremonies.

"Animals cannot just be sacrificed for the interest of political leaders," said Sangeeta Goswami, head of the Assam chapter of the activist group, People for Animals.

"It is strange when India talks of progress in science and technology and is clamping down on child marriages, it is allowing such practices as animal sacrifices in temples," she said.

Samrite defended animal sacrifices, calling it "an age-old practice."

"How can anyone interfere with a religious practice inside a temple complex?" he asked.

200 goats? SCORE! It's a religious ritual, why is it big enough of a deal to make news here?

Let them hold on to a small piece of the old ways even if some of us don't understand.

I think OP was looking an uproar on SVTP's part about another religion's beliefs, because they aren't inline with his own. All religious practices are a little kooky in this day and age, it doesn't discount their relevance though or mean their practitioners are all weirdos (although quite a few are). Maybe I should start a thread about how wild it is that Catholics consume the 'body and blood of christ' in the form of crackers and wine. At the top of the post I can say "When will this nonsense end?"

You assumed I'm Catholic which I'm not. Because it's a religious practice - killing 200 goats and 4 buffalo's, it's off limits to question the sanity of it?

FlahDah man.
Not to be hypocritical, since I do eat chicken and fish, if after the sacrifices the goats eyes, brains, & meat are eaten then as weird as the custom might be so be it. On the other hand if they are just tossed away, then that is still insanity to me...
honored guests get those lucky items, sucks to be honored! Also don't be offended if someone is ripping the meat from the bone and placing it in front of you with the pile O rice! they just do not want you to burn your fingers and it is a sign of respect to serve the guest in such a manner.

Actually I wasn't suggesting that you are catholic at all. I was using it as an example, how religious practices can be seen as strange no matter what your beliefs are. It's their religious beliefs, who am I to question those practices? We all do weird things, not sure why we need to point out each other's oddities because they are different than our own. Even more so when it comes to religion.

I can see if you questioned the reasoning behind it in an educational or research sense, but to bash some one else's religious practices because they are different from yours is just plain ignorance.

I could care less if they are sacrificing goats, if they were sacrificing virgins on the other hand, that is where I draw the line. That would be just plain wasteful.

This thread does not excite me all that much, but I do not condone justifying violence in the context of religion or faith. And if those animals were not consumed or used in some productive manner, then it was unnecessary and nonsensical. This is a good example of religion and faith subtly separating morality from well-being.
