The Big3 has had all the time in the world to be the leaders in EV yet here we are. All they have delivered thus far is crap econoboxes which nobody can get excited about.
I think starting with trucks made the most sense for GM and Ford this time, but time will tell if they remain leaders in these segments.

Tornado Damaged C8 Corvettes Have Been Destroyed

Steven Symes - Monday

No, you can’t get a discount on these cars…
While the tornado which hit Bowling Green, Kentucky was a horrific event primarily because of the homes and livelihoods which were lost, we and many other enthusiasts mourned the loss of the rare and highly sought after C8 Corvettes damaged in the storm. Some were hoping GM would sell those mid-engine sports cars at a reduced price, kind of like when you go to a dent and scratch furniture store, but that was never in the cards.

Instead, GM has crushed all the damaged C8 Corvettes rather than have the potentially defective cars end up in consumers’ hands. That might seem like an odd decision since people wreck Corvettes and they end up in salvage yards, then are fixed and sometimes not very well.

While that might seem like the same thing, the truth is those Corvettes wrecked by customers weren’t in the possession and control of GM, so the automaker couldn’t do anything about them. Once a car is delivered to a customer it’s pretty much the new owner’s problem, barring anything covered by the warranty or found to be caused by faulty manufacturing practices.

Two photos taken by Kornel J Werner and posted on Facebook show dozens of C8s, most if not all without doors, front clips, and a few other parts all lined up neatly like they’re in front of a firing squad. Those cars were damaged in the storm and have already been crushed, so there’s no convincing GM to stop like how the electric car people tried to stop the automaker from destroying the EV1. Maybe Michael Moore can make a movie about this automotive industry coverup?
Sadly, this means at least this many customers who have been waiting for their new C8 Corvette are going to be waiting even longer.

Ford Plan Could Stop Dealer Markups, Hinder F-150 Lightning Flippers

Chris Bruce - Yesterday 2:29 PM

1641662002337.png

The punishment for a dealer who breaks the rules could be as bad as losing its allotment of Lightnings.

Ford is instituting measures to keep dealers from marking up the price of the F-150 Lightning and preventing buyers from flipping the electric truck immediately after taking delivery. The company outlined these strategies in an email sent to showrooms that the F150Gen14 forum posted.
According to the opening of the document: "It has come to our attention that a limited number of dealerships are interacting with customers in a manner that is negatively impacting customer satisfaction and damaging to the Ford Motor Company brand and Dealer Body reputation."
It lists an example as "demanding customers who are already on the reservation list for the 22 MY F-150 Lightning make additional deposits or payments."
If Ford determines a dealer is engaging in these practices, the automaker reserves the right to send the showroom's allocation of Lightnings to other locations for the entire 2022 model year. That would be a serious penalty for a model that is projected to be popular.
Motor1.com reached out to Ford to find out if any dealers had been punished. We were told this announcement just went out today, so nothing has happened yet.

At the same time, Ford gives dealers the choice to have Lightning buyers sign a contract that prevents them from selling the pickup for one year after taking delivery. Conceivably, this strategy could give a showroom an incentive not to add market adjustments to the Lightning because there's no concern about the new owner immediately flipping the truck for a profit.
It's worth noting that this contract is optional for dealers to offer, not mandatory. "Such a requirement is between a dealer and their customer. It is up to the dealer to decide to use it and to consult with local laws in the state they operate should they choose to do so," Ford spokesperson Emma Berg told Motor1.com.
Ford recently announced a plan to increase Lightning production because of demand for the electric truck. The first of them arrive in showrooms this spring. A fully optioned example can cost $97,249.

Tesla raises price of "Full Self-Driving" software to $12,000

Jan. 09, 2022 2:36 AM ETTesla, Inc. (TSLA)By: Yoel Minkoff, SA News Editor49 Comments

Teslas Stock Hits Two And Half Year Low As Analysts Continue Downgrading The Company

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News

  • "Tesla FSD price rising to $12k on Jan 17. Just in the US," tweeted Elon Musk on Saturday. "FSD price will rise as we get closer to FSD production code release."
  • The premium driver assistance package, marketed as "Full Self-Driving," or FSD, currently costs $10,000 up-front, or $199 per month for most customers. "Monthly subscription price will rise when FSD goes to wide release," Musk added in the tweet thread. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) began testing FSD in Beta in October 2020, when it was priced at $8,000 for a select group of customers, but increased the price to $10,000 shortly thereafter. Electric vehicle reset as auto giants GM, Ford and Volkswagen charge in.
  • Flashback from May 2020: "The FSD price will continue to rise as the software gets closer to full self-driving capability with regulatory approval. It that point, the value of FSD is probably somewhere in excess of $100,000."
  • Tesla's (TSLA) Full-Self Driving option includes standard Autopilot functions (automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control), as well as sophisticated features like automatic lane-changing, stop light recognition and "Smart Summon." Most importantly, it does not yet allow cars to drive themselves automatically despite the name. What could go wrong in the electric vehicle revolution? Not enough lithium.
  • More commentary: Musk recently talked about FSD on the Lex Fridman Podcast, saying it's "looking quite likely" that Tesla (TSLA) will "solve Level 4 FSD" in 2022. "Anyone who's been following the Full-Self Driving beta closely will see that the rate of disengagements has been dropping rapidly. There's engagement B where the driver intervenes to prevent the car from doing something dangerous, potentially. The interventions per million miles have been dropping dramatically... I think it's got to be at least two or three times better, higher safety than a human. Two or three times lower probability of injury than a human before we would actually say, 'okay, it's okay to go.' It’s not going to be equivalent, it's going to be much better."

The electric GMC Hummer EV is so powerful it can pop wheelies
1,000 horsepower pickup is a monster truck.

By Gary Gastelu | Fox News

The new GMC Hummer can fly. At least part of it can.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV has a 1,000 hp all-wheel-drive system.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV has a 1,000 hp all-wheel-drive system. (GMC)

Hummer EV chief engineer Al Oppenheiser told The Drive that during development they discovered that the 1,000 horsepower full-size pickup could lift its front end.
The Hummer EV has a performance mode called Watts to Freeedom, or WTF, that optimizes it for acceleration and programs the adaptive air suspension to transfer the weight of the all-wheel-drive truck to the rear to improve traction on take-off, as its three electric motors deliver 1,200 lb-ft of torque to the tires.

Oppenheiser said that they had to dial back the power on the production versions to prevent the wheelies for safety reasons, but that it could be tuned to do it again.

The GMC Hummer EV can accelerate to 60 mph in approximately three seconds.

The GMC Hummer EV can accelerate to 60 mph in approximately three seconds. (GMC)

The only production car ever sold with the advertised ability to pop a wheelie was the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon muscle car, which could pull it off on a drag strip when properly prepped and launched.

Even if the Hummer EV can't do one, it has another cool trick called Crab Walk mode that allows it to turn all four wheels 10 degrees in the same direction and drive diagonally at low speeds.

Carmakers Launch Desperate Attempt to Delay Massachusetts Right-to-Repair Law

Mack DeGeurin - 5h ago

1642035120682.png

Major car manufacturers aren’t giving up on their efforts to stymie Massachusetts’ right to repair legislation. Less than two years after residents in the state voted in favor of updated right to repair laws that would let independent auto repair shops receive telematics data from vehicles, groups representing auto manufacturers are now introducing their own new proposals that would delay the law’s implementation.
If passed, the two new proposals, first viewed by Motherboard, would push back the starting date of Massachusetts’ right to repair law to 2025, three years later than the original 2022 start date. Though supporters of the proposal argue the extra years would give automakers more time to comply with the laws, the efforts were derided by critics like Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition Director Tommy Hickey.
“Massachusetts consumers have spoken, and the law now gives them the right to control their own repair data so that they can get their car fixed where they want,” Hickey told the Gloucester Daily Times. “However, instead of listening to their customers and attempting to comply with the ballot initiative, automakers and dealers filed a baseless, anti-democratic lawsuit.”

For those unaware, Massachusetts’ 2020 law was intended to make it easier for small auto shops to access diagnostic data about vehicles without the need for proprietary tools available only to manufacturers. When the law goes into effect, The Drive notes, it would require any automaker doing business in the state to allow this telematics data to be accessible through a smartphone app.

Tesla's Cybertruck arrival might be pushed out to 2023

TSLA -1.12%Jan. 13, 2022 8:52 AM ET122 Comments
  • Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) removed a reference on its website to 2022 as a production date for the Cybertruck, as spotted by Edmunds, the wording now just says "you will be able to complete your configuration as production nears."
  • The apparent delay comes after Tesla (TSLA) reportedly attracted more than 1.3M reservations for the Cybertruck and was promising at one point delivery to customers by the end of 2022. The all-electric truck is anticipated to feature range of up to 500 miles and is expected to price at around $40K. The 0-to-60 mph speed is listed at 2.5 seconds.
  • Potential competitors for the Cybertruck down the road include Rivian's (NASDAQ:RIVN) R1T, Ford's (NYSE:F) electric F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet's (NYSE:GM) all-electric Silverado and even the GMC Hummer EV.

Next-Gen Ford Mustang Spied For The First Time With Production Body

The redesigned pony car should have a familiar face.

We've known for some time that the seventh-generation Ford Mustang is deep into development. Occasional sightings of test mules haven't revealed much in the way of styling, but now we have our first look at the next Mustang wearing its production body.
This prototype is obviously well hidden beneath heavy camouflage, but we can still see the outline of a grille similar to present-day Mustangs behind the lighter coverings. The camouflage on the front mimics the GT500's face, but don't be concerned about the new Mustang adopting a massive grille similar to the BMW 4 Series. We can see a bumper separating the grille from the lower fascia, and we can also make out thin headlights flanking the opening. Overall, the nose looks more angular and perhaps a bit flatter and narrower compared to the sixth-generation car on sale today.
