Ford builds up inventory as it looks to move past chip shortages

F +0.06%Apr. 04, 2022 4:09 PM ET1 Comment
An industry-wide chip shortage hurt Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) in March when U.S. light vehicle sales fell 26%, but analysts have noted that demand remains strong and inventory is rebuilding.
Overall inventory in transit rose 73.5% from February, including up 127% for the crucial F-Series line. That means the F-Series year-over-year decline are unlikely to repeat all year, especially when the year-over-year comparables start to lap when the chip shortage started in June of 2021.
Ford's (F) push to have consumers order ahead of time continues to gain momentum with a record 41% of retail channel deliveries from previously placed orders, which is up notably from 33% in February
"Ford is turning itself around by focusing on light-truck models in the U.S., which we think is the right move given light trucks are over 75% of U.S. industry new light-vehicle sales," stated Morningstar analyst David Whiston.
Whiston thinks Ford's challenge is to increase share profitably while elevating Lincoln into a global luxury brand. Headwinds from areas such as restructuring and commodities are seen, while investments in mobility and electrification are noted to take years to bear fruit.
Shares of Ford (F) have shed close to 20% year-to-date, but are ahead of the return of rival General Motors.
The Seeking Alpha Quant Rating is still flashing Strong Buy.

Ford Bronco Could Lose Factory Installed Navigation System: Report

2022 Ford Bronco Everglades Edition Exterior

The option might go away starting in May.

The global semiconductor shortage shows no signs of slowing down. As such, automakers continue to make adjustments in the hopes of keeping production lines up and running. At Ford, that could mean no more factory-installed navigation systems in the Bronco starting in May.

The rumor surfaced at Ford Authority, citing anonymous sources claiming the feature will be removed starting with Job 2 production on May 2. Motor1.com reached out to Ford for additional information; a spokesperson said that 2022 Broncos continue to be built with navigation, and that the company is considering "many options to help get vehicles to our customers sooner during this global shortage of semiconductor chips." Ford offered no direct response to navigation being dropped from the Bronco next month.

Ford offers factory-installed navigation on all Broncos except the entry-level Base trim. Per the rumor, Ford is allegedly creating a navigation removal order code as opposed to simply dropping it as an option. This suggests navigation will return, though there's no word if it will come back for 2022 model-year production or whether it will stretch into 2023. It's also not clear if navigation can be added later once the necessary components are available.

2023 Kia Telluride teased with new tech and X-Pro off-road trim. Fast-selling SUV is getting an makeover it doesn't really need.

By Gary Gastelu | Fox News

The Kia Telluride is getting a refresh for 2023, even though it doesn't need it.

The 2023 Kia Telluride will debut at the New York International Auto Show

The 2020 World Car of the Year is Kia's best-selling SUV and is one of the fastest-selling vehicles in the U.S. in February, according to data from iseecars.com.

Time marches on, however, and its due for its regularly scheduled mid-cycle redesign for 2023, which appears to be more substantial than most.

Kia has released two teaser images of the three-row SUV ahead of its debut at the upcoming New York International Auto Show.

The 2023 Kia Telluride features a new digital dashboard.

A shadowy image of its exterior suggest it will receive mild updates that include new lighting, but a rendering of the interior reveals a full overhaul of the dashboard.

In place of the traditional layout in the current model, which has an instrument cluster with analogue gauges and a separate touchscreen infotainment system in the center of the dashboard, is what appears to be a single housing one or more widescreen displays similar to what's featured in several of Kia's other latest models.

Kia also confirmed that the Telluride will be offered in a new X-Pro trim, which will include rugged equipment and features suitable for light off-roading.

The Telluride will be revealed in full at the New York International Auto Show on April 13 along with the new Kia Niro compact SUV, which will be available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EV.

Vietnam's VinFast seeks US government loans for expansion. The automaker filed this week for an initial public offering (IPO) with U.S. securities regulators

The chairman of Vietnam’s Vingroup conglomerate said on Saturday that the company’s auto unit, VinFast, would seek financing from the U.S. government to support its expansion with a planned plant in North Carolina. "It is also one of our financing options, but we need to prove to them that we are qualified," Vingroup Chairman Pham Nhat Vuong told a group including reporters.

VinFast said this week that its Singapore-based holding company had filed for an initial public offering (IPO) with U.S. securities regulators, as the company readies a $4-billion investment to build a factory in the United States.

VinFast, which began operations in 2019, is betting big on the U.S. market, where it hopes to compete with legacy automakers and startups with two all-electric SUVs and a battery leasing model that will reduce the purchase price.

Vuong said VinFast was committed to an IPO that would help establish the electric vehicle maker as a global brand, but added: "if the conditions are not right we can wait. We ourselves are determined to push and committed to this IPO, but the highest target for the IPO is not financing but to set up VinFast in the global market," he told the group.

Lending from the U.S. government's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (AVTM) loan program was another option VinFast was exploring, Vuong said, in response to a question.

The $25-billion fund was established by Congress in 2007 when Detroit-based automakers were tipping into crisis. It is administered by the Department of Energy still has a lending capacity of almost $18 billion, according to its website. VinFast has promised to create 7,500 jobs at its planned plant in North Carolina, where it will build the battery-powered VF8 and VF9 SUVs. The company has said it plans to begin construction of the plant as soon as permits are granted with a goal of starting production by 2024.

It plans to begin exporting the two electric vehicles to the United States later this year from its existing plant in Vietnam.

Fast and futuristic Jeep Magneto leads Easter Safari into Moab. All-electric SUV is lightning quick

By Gary Gastelu | Fox News

Ford may have the F-150 Lightning, but the Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 is lightning-quick.

The all-electric SUV concept is making its debut at the Easter Jeep Safari off-road festival in Moab, Utah, on April 9 along with six other custom vehicles meant to showcase Jeep parts and possibilities for future models.

The Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 has a 625 hp electric drivetrain.

The Magneto is built on a Wrangler frame that's been stretched by a foot to fit its new powertrain, which includes four battery packs with a combined capacity of 70 kilowatt-hours and a flux axial electric motor rated at 625 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque that drives the wheels through a conventional six-speed transmission and 4x4 system.

The Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 can accelerate to 60 mph in two seconds. It's also equipped with what Jeep calls an "electronic nitrous oxide system" that cranks up the amps for short sprints and allows it to accelerate to 60 mph in two seconds. That's quicker than a modern Formula One car and on par with the Tesla Model S Plaid, and the Jeep does it with 40-inch all-terrain tires and a three-inch suspension lift.

While the Magento is the most extreme machine heading to Moab, here's a look at a few of Jeep's other creations:

JEEP RUBICON 20TH ANNIVERSARY CONCEPT

The Jeep Rubicon 20th Anniversary Concept celebrates the top of the line model.

The Jeep Rubicon 20th Anniversary Concept celebrates the top of the line model. (Jeep)

The Rubicon 20th Anniversary concept celebrates the extreme off-road trim's milestone birthday and is likely a thinly-veiled glimpse at a production truck that will be on sale for the 2023 model year. The four-door Wrangler is powered by a 392 cubic-inch V* and equipped with half-doors, the Sky One-touch power-opening roof and wrapped in matte granite crystal. A two-inch lift kit, Warn winch, and 37-inch tires help round out the package.

JEEP '41 CONCEPT

The Jeep ‘41 concept salutes the brand’s past and future. The plug-in hybrid Rubicon 4xe features a military olive drab and tan color scheme, steel wheels, half-doors powdered coded bumpers and stencil graphics.

JEEP D-CODER CONCEPT

The Jeep D-Coder concept is a showcase for Jeep Performance Parts.

The Jeep D-Coder is like a catalog on wheels. It's a Gladiator pickup that's been equipped with 35 accessories from the Jeep Performance Parts catalog, including an air intake snorkel, tube doors and auxiliary LED lights. Each part has a QR code displayed on it, so if you happen upon it on the rocks and like what you see you can just scan the code and go straight to the online parts store to purchase it.

JEEP BOB CONCEPT

The Jeep Bob concept is a Gladiator pickup with a very short bed.

The Jeep Bob's name isn't a reference to some CJ-driving guy named Robert, but to the "bobbed" cargo bed of Gladiator pickup, which is a foot shorter than stock for improved off-roading. The diesel-powered truck also features teeny custom bumpers that further improve its approach and departure angles and high clearance fenders to accommodate its three-inch lifted suspension and 37-inch tires. A special hardtop frame provides support for its canvas bikini soft top.

JEEP BIRDCAGE CONCEPT

The Jeep Birdcage concept by JPP is a very open-air take on the Wrangler.

The Jeep Birdcage is a permanently open-air version of the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe that's had its windshield and windshield wipers removed, and a cowl installed to close the gaps left by them. It's fully engaged with roof bars, rock rails and a front bumper with a rock slider, recessed winch and tow hooks mounted out of the way on its sides. The 50-state legal fender flares also have removable daytime running lights for increased clearance, a first of its kind feature.

Honda eyes 2M electric vehicles annually by 2030, $64B on R&D

HMC -0.08%Apr. 11, 2022 10:25 PM ET2 Comments
Honda (NYSE:HMC) unveiled plans to spend 8T yen ($63.8B) on research and development over the next 10 years, including 5T yen on its push into electric vehicles, adding specifics to its aggressive talk about its commitment to cutting carbon emissions.
The Japanese automaker said it will seek to launch 30 electric vehicle models by 2030 with an annual output volume of more than 2M vehicles, and build a demonstration line for the production of all-solid-state batteries with a goal to start production in 2024.
Last month, Honda said it would team up with Sony to develop EVs with plans to go on sale starting in 2025, and earlier this month, Honda and General Motors expanded their existing tie-up with plans to jointly develop affordable EVs in major global markets.

THE FORD MAVERICK IS CRUSHING IT IN SALES

Muscle Cars and Trucks - Yesterday 2:19 PM

© Muscle Cars and Trucks

Ford Motor Company continues to sell as many Maverick small trucks as it can build, and Q1 2022 sales results for the truck show some impressive statistics. Grouped in with larger midsize trucks, the mighty Maverick comes in fourth place, behind the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Chevrolet Colorado. Compared to the Hyundai Santa Cruz and the Honda Ridgeline – the only other two unibody trucks for sale in the USA – the Maverick tallies more than double their combined sales.

Turns out people really like their Ford trucks, eh?
Perhaps the most surprising sales stat from Q1 2022 was that the Ford Maverick beat out its slightly bigger brother though, the Ford Ranger by about 1,600 units (19,245 to 17,639 units in the USA). The Ranger was also slightly outsold by the Jeep Gladiator, which accounted for 17,912 units.

The data otherwise reveals that everybody is playing catch-up to the longstanding midsize truck sales champion, the Toyota Tacoma, which delivered 53,182 units in the first three months of 2022. Combined, the Ranger and Maverick accounted for 36,884 units, which would put Ford in second place in the combined segment overall. General Motors would be in third, with 21,693 sales from the Chevrolet Colorado (third place overall), and 6,160 sales from the GMC Canyon (ninth overall), totaling 27,853 units.

What’s got people fawning over the Maverick? When it comes to overall gas consumption, the little truck has achieved a remarkable 600 mile range on one tank utilizing the standard 2.5L hybrid engine which comes out to about 44 MPG on average. Even a souped-up Maverick can make your next trip to the gas station a little further away as we’ve seen 39 MPG in modified Maverick trucks as well.

It amazes me how the cut/pate articles like this exhibit an "Ah ha" revelation about small trucks.
Ford quit making the overpriced Ranger in St. Paul, MN in what 2011?

Since then people, like myself, have been begging for a simple, inexpensive, no frills pick-up.

Now reports show Mavericks are flying off the shelves.

Amazing isn't it?

Ford, along with all the other manufacturers, have a couple engineers with guts, but mostly douche-knot haired, tree hugging cucks.

Never understood why Ford let the Ranger die on the vine with no updates. Their logic was that a old model with no updates doesn't sell, so we won't update it so it will sell better.

Yupper.

I think it had a lot to do with:
1) Union workers costs (pensions, healthcare, MN regulations)
2) Antiquated facilities (90 year old buildings)
3) Pollution liability - was/is a superfund site.
4) Location - right in the middle of a residential population.

^ and none of these even relate to the truck design itself - lol.

Also wasn't that about the time Mullally left?

Agree, they basically did not want to put money into an orphan facility.

The new ESQ SUV features a driving range of over 373 miles and an output of up to 536 horsepower. The EQS SUV has a lithium-ion battery with 12 cell modules and hardcase cells to give it capacity of over 107.8 kWh.
Mercedes-Benz on the new model: "The SUV offers plenty of space, comfort and connectivity for up to seven passengers in its avant-garde, luxurious interior. F -0.62%Now!
"This is just the start of our electric journey." Lincoln President Joy Falotico said in a company statement
  • Ford Motor (NYSE:F) plans to launch four new EVs into its Lincoln lineup by 2026 which was announced along with the introduction of a new concept EV called the Lincoln Star.
  • "As Lincoln enters the next chapter in our transition to a zero-emissions future, the Lincoln Star Concept will lead the way for our portfolio of fully electric vehicles," Falotico added.
  • Lincoln expects EVs to make up more than half of its global volume by mid-decade and 90% of its North American sales by 2030.
  • While Lincoln has failed to gain much traction in the U.S. in recent years outside of its large Navigator SUV, brand sales stood at 112K units in 2019 and it dropped to 87K vehicles in 2021.
  • In China, Lincoln has seen strength with 7% growth in 2021 sales.

GM reportedly stops providing battery pack replacements for the Chevy Spark EV

Emma Roth - Yesterday 9:43 AM

General Motors will reportedly no longer provide battery replacements for the all-electric version of the Chevy Spark, according to a report from EV-Resource (via InsideEVs). The Chevy Spark electric vehicle (EV) was first released in 2013, and GM continued to make new models until 2016.
A GM district executive confirmed to EV-Resource that the company is “no longer going to supply that [the Spark EV’s] battery.” GM’s inventory of Spark EV battery packs has reportedly run out as well, and the company doesn’t plan on making any more. The Verge reached out to GM with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back.

It’s unclear if GM will continue to honor the Spark EV’s battery pack warranty
With the oldest model of the Spark EV reaching almost 10 years old, vehicle owners may find themselves without a working car if their battery pack fails. GM offers an eight-year / 100,000-mile warranty specifically for the battery pack in its Spark EVs and other electric vehicles, which means the warranty has already run out (or is very close to running out) for Spark EVs released in 2013 and 2014. It’s unclear if GM will continue to honor its warranty and somehow replace the battery pack in broken-down Sparks, or as EV-Resource points out, if GM will offer to buy back the vehicle instead of replacing the battery.

Spark EV owners might not have the best of luck finding an aftermarket battery pack either. EV-Resource notes that there really isn’t a market for Spark EV batteries when compared to other EVs, considering companies might not find value in providing parts for a car that’s on the more inexpensive side (the base 2016 model sold at an MSRP of less than $26,000). Plus, GM only managed to sell around 7,400 Spark EVs — mainly in California, Oregon, and Maryland — before ending its three-year run.

As GM works toward making and replacing battery packs in over 140,000 electric Chevy Bolts that were recalled last year due to fire risks, perhaps GM just doesn’t have the bandwidth to create battery pack replacements for the Spark EV. GM only resumed manufacturing Bolt EVs in early April following a production freeze lasting several months, and also recently announced its plans to discontinue the non-electric version of the Chevy Spark sometime this year.

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) will produce an electrified version of the iconic Chevrolet Corvette next year to be followed shortly after with an all-electric version of the sports car.
GM President Mark Reuss disclosed the development on CNBC on Monday morning. He made it clear that the internal combustion engine version of the Corvette will also continued to be sold by the Detroit auto giant.
See GM's teaser video of the all-electric Corvette.
The history of the Chevrolet Corvette dates back to 1953 and the model has been known as "America's Sports Car."
In March, GM began production of an all-electric Cadillac Lyriq to give that brand its electric jolt.
Earlier in the year, GM stated that it plans to accelerate production of electric vehicles to reach 400,000 EVs delivered in North America during 2022 and 2023.

GM only resumed manufacturing Bolt EVs in early April following a production freeze lasting several months, and also recently announced its plans to discontinue the non-electric version of the Chevy Spark sometime this year.
LMAO.

I wonder if the Corvett-E is going to be a four door crossover too. Just slap a badge on a Trailblazer and done!

C8 values are going to the moon with this. Such a shame the C8Z is going to be such a brief moment for such an incredible car.

I would think this spells some inbound turbulence for domestic producers too.

“The COVID-19 resurgence in the Yangtze Delta region continues to cause severe industry-wide disruptions in supply chain, logistics and production since late March,” Li Auto (LI) president Yanan Shen commented. “Our Changzhou manufacturing base is located in the center of the Yangtze Delta region, which is home to over 80% of our parts suppliers, especially in Shanghai and Kunshan.”

The forecast of the entire industry being hit by the shutdown of the country’s largest metropoles is indeed reflected in its peers’ results. Nio (NIO) reported its supply chain has been “volatile” since late March and is still recovering from the shutdown in production.
