Figured I'd share one of my latest finds buying like new junk from a Government liquidation site. This is a MEP-831a permanent magnet generator. Built in 2010 Reset/Rebuilt when it had 2 hours on it. So now that it had sat for just over 3 years, the government sells it. "Short meaning the battery is dead" So a 3k Yanmar valued in the thousands bought at $710. 120/240 diesel gen that has a pull start still in wrap and tagged. We get it home, and it starts at first pull. Tests out with perfect operation.

unreal how wasteful government is.

The items we buy are rebuilt stagnant units. If it is not combat ready and or outdated, they go to auction. It is far better to auction then scarp. This is the most economical unit burning 4 gal. 8 hours I think. We have a mep-802 that is 5k but a fuel hog.

When I was stationed with 11th Marines we used those all the time while in the field. I can see it being a good generator for civilian use and not beat to death, but they were big pieces of crap for the Engineers that had to maintain them. They were designed to come in a set of two so they could be ran 12 on 12 off. But of course we would run one until we killed it then move on to kill the next.

Taken care of it should serve you well.

Yeah, it won't see that kind of use from us. We do have the auxiliary tank if we wanted to run it for hours on end. It's good to know the duty cycle has been field proved. All the service parts are cheap and eBay accessible. The pull start it what amazes me, if the batt goes bad.

Here is another cool thing about military items. Things like this have complete TM manual for complete repairs, operation, and maintenance. 516 pages downloadable.

Nice pick. I'd like one in the 10kw range.

That would be the Fermont Onan MEP-803a they go from about $800 to 1500 depending on hours. Our 802 sets for months and fires off instantly.

Edited with right number 803

Price of the last one that sold.

Geez, I'd love one of those as whole house unit.

They come up for sale in groups quite frequently. Our power has not gone out (for anymore then a couple minutes)since we bought and wired our 802 into the house 3 years ago. Uncle Sam now has a solar generation field up and running next to a transfer station about 2 miles away(Thanks Obama!) Key thing to look for when buying is the reset tag. That means the were completely gone through. They never put new hour meters on unless broke.

Thanks, I'm sure that could be hard wired into a transfer switch?
